From the Executive Director
|
We need you, in 2022!
Do you have time to get to know your neighbors and improve your community this year? There are lots of opportunities just waiting for volunteers to come forward. The Emergency Committee is looking for Area Captains to help prepare for the next emergency, as well as more volunteers to serve on the committee itself. Right now our Nominations Committee is busy trying to identify people to run for the Board of Directors. There are many other committees, projects, and activities, large and small, that could use your talents. Please help.
I know we’ve got a good spot for you.
Cindi Kingsley

County moves closer to finalizing historical review process
|
Santa Clara County is now enforcing new regulations focused on preserving the character of potentially historic structures in the San Juan Residential District (San Juan, Pine Hill I & II, and Frenchman’s). While the county did not identify any potential historic district and will not seek any historic preservation overlay districts, any residence over 50 years old will be subject to a new historical review process. SCRL board member Grace Hinton summarizes the latest developments here. Read more>>

Four owl boxes were installed in October in Lathrop and Frenchman’s Parks, at the Mayfield playfield, and near Gerona Road. Attracting more owls, who prey on rodents, is a part of the SCRL sustainability committee’s efforts to reduce the number of rodents and the use of rodenticides in the SCRL neighborhoods.
Neighborhood birdwatchers have yet to confirm that any owls have taken up residence and are on the lookout both for the birds and the tell-tale talon marks near the openings of the boxes. If you are out at dusk and happen to see owls near one of the boxes, let us know.

Raimundo parking task force formed
|
The SCRL board has approved the creation of a task force to study the issues around parking on Raimundo near Peter Coutts Road. The task force will be chaired by Professor Hank Greely and will include residents of Peter Coutts, residents from the nearby streets (Tolman, Cathcart, and Allardice), and university representatives from Public Safety and Lands, Buildings & Real Estate. The committee will present their findings to the board and make recommendations to the university by September 2022.

Send us your neighborhood photos!
|
Because the slide show at the beginning of the annual meeting in December was such a hit, the board has decided to open their monthly meetings with a selection of recent photos from around the neighborhood. If you have photos of something interesting you’ve seen in the neighborhood, on campus, or at a community event, send them to Holly Thompson. We’ll add them to the slide show for neighbors to enjoy while waiting for the zoom meeting to begin.

SCRL honors longtime friend Robert Carpenter, welcomes new university liaison Jessica von Borck
|
Robert Carpenter, who served as the university’s liaison to SCRL since 2009, retired in October from his job as Executive Director of Lands, Buildings & Real Estate Operations. The SCRL board dedicated a bench to this “steadfast friend of SCRL” in Frenchman’s Park and honored him at the October meeting. The university’s new liaison is Jessica von Borck, Executive Director of Land Use in LBRE. Members have enjoyed meeting her virtually in board meetings and working with her on emergency planning and other initiatives.
