July 4th Office Closure
The office will be closed Wednesday, July 4th.

VFR Ground School Begins July 8
 Summer is here, school is out! What will you do with all that spare time? How about taking the first step to obtaining your Private Pilot License by signing up now for the Private Pilot Ground School starting Sunday, July 8th. The classes are delivered in a highly interactive manner with content that is constantly being updated and is relevant to flying in the Bay Area. The training not only prepares you for the knowledge test but provides a solid foundation for the oral portion of the checkride. Some unique features include:

SCFC Member Launches Aviation Weather Bot
 We just love it when members of the SCFC community create cool new tools for pilots to use. Member Michel Vidal-Naquet has done just that. Noticing that chatbots are emerging as a new, popular interface, Michel started thinking about how this new tool could be applied to aviation.
Knowing that we all need to access weather information, he decided this would be a good starting point. Michel has created a weather bot using Facebook Messenger, drawing information from the same data sources that populate the METARs and TAFs you normally obtain from aviationweather.gov.
 To use the chatbot, simply go to facebook messenger and type in @avwbot, or go to
https://m.me/avwbot and select the "Get Started" button. You can ask for METAR or TAF information by typing in the type of information you need and the airport you are researching, or use the menu to get SIGMET information. With a user base that has already spread beyond the US, Michel says that he will be adding new information in the future - including sunset, sunrise, and civil twilight times.

Flying Safely with Fireworks
Pilots have access to a rare view - fireworks as seen from the air. On clear, calm, 4th of July nights, some pilots take the opportunity to celebrate with a night flight. An airplane can truly provide the best seats in the house.
If you plan to fly on Wednesday, July 4th, take the necessary precautions. Be night current if you are taking passengers, and plan a route that keeps you safely above the action. Large fireworks can go as high as 1,500 feet AGL but most are less than 1,000 feet AGL. Exercise caution and circle wide of the firing area. It will be safer and will give you a better view of the action.

SFO Class B Airspace is Changing!
SFO Airspace Safety Lecture at SCFC

Did you know the new SFO Class Bravo Airspace is set to go into print on August 16? To help raise awareness of this critical airspace change, SCFC is partnering with the FAA Safety team in San Jose, to host a presentation and discussion about the new SFO Bravo.
Join us on Saturday, July 28th from 10:00am - 12:00pm, when Michael Seko,
Support Specialist, NCT TRACON, will present the plan with a Q&A session will follow. Seminars on the new SFO Class B seminars will be repeated at Reid Hillview Airport, San Jose and in the Sacramento/Merced area. Dates and locations will be announced on FAASafety.gov.

ADS-B Now Seminar at the Hiller Museum
Tuesday July 10, 7:30pm
It is estimated that almost half of the aircraft in the San Francisco Bay Area will be grounded in 16 months because they are not ADS-B compliant. This seminar will focus on all aspects of flight and airplane management that are affected by the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast system.
Pilots will learn how ADS-B will make flying easier and at the same time understand the problems they should expect to encounter. A thorough review of every type of radio that will bring an aircraft into compliance including their costs, benefits, limitations, and installation will also be included.
The Hiller Aviation Museum will host this seminar in conjunction with the San Carlos Flight Center, EAA and the Sheriff's Association. Presenter

We'll challenge each other to a controller competition, check out the latest additions to the fleet and tire out the kids, young & old, in the jumper. Sharing Our Success at GA Spark
In late August, SCFC is hosting a small, 2-day conference for representatives of other flight schools and flying clubs. GA SPARK is SCFC's attempt to share some of the great ideas that set the Flight Center apart, with hard-working flight school and flying club managers from around the country. The event is all about idea sharing, and energy, as playfully personified by the seminar mascots, Captain SPARK and the Energy Team. If you are proud to be a member of SCFC, and want to help more flying clubs around the country develop a member-centric model of safety, community, and adventure, you should consider helping out with SPARK. FOG Lunch at the California State Fair!
Saturday July 14, 12:00pm
 This month we fly up to Sacramento for the California State Fair! We'll be flying into Executive (8 miles away) and ride-sharing to the fair. Make sure to sign up below to coordinate rides from the airport to the event.
This trip is the perfect opportunity for logging a cross country flight, or for stopping at airports along the way to practice approaches or performance take-offs and landings. Bring along friends and family members who aren't pilots, or offer a student pilot a ride. Show your significant other, kids, and friends what fun you have with your favorite hobby!
Pilots: please list any open seats in your plane. Ride-seekers: please sign up, then contact those with open seats to ride along.

Full Moon Flyer Dinner at Stockton
Join us this month for our annual dinner at Stockton! Our Upwind Scholarship members will be flying their night ride check off and will join our FOG Full Moon Flyers at Stockton Airport (KSCK) for a special dinner event. Top Flight Grill does not usually serve dinner, however, to help encourage our Upwind flyers, we arrange for them to stay open just for us. In the past two years we have had more than fifty people attend to try out their famous tri-tip steaks.
Our Full Moon Flyer dinners are a great way to keep up your night flight currency requirements. If you're not current, but want to get back in the night sky, talk to your favorite instructor and see if they're available to join you for this fun event.

Recovering from Inverted Flight Safety Seminar
Wednesday June 25, 7:00pm
You thought you were clear of the B757's wake turbulence as you crossed the bay towards Coyote Hills, then in a flash you were inverted.
You have less that a couple of seconds to decide. What do you do? A reflex reaction may not be correct. Only with awareness, expectation and training will you know. This seminar is the beginning of your training and may save your life.
Tom Myers has been flying competitive aerobatics for twenty-eight years. He has over 2,000 flight hours, mostly NOT straight, or level, or upright. In this seminar, he will discuss the dos and don'ts of recovering from unintentional inverted flight, and the underlying whys. He will discuss stall and spin avoidance during the recovery as well as the physiological sensing of motion and orientation, maintaining 3D spatial awareness and G tolerance.
