Announcing SCFC Maintenance

You may have noticed some new faces at the Flight Center. We are pleased to announce that we have brought aircraft maintenance in house. Join us in welcoming Don Broderick and Mario Filice, our first two mechanics to join the team. In-house maintenance will help us address squawks faster, reduce aircraft down time, and give us better control of quality as we continue to grow.

Learn more about Mario in the Member Profile section of this month's newsletter. Then stop by the maintenance hangar to say hello.

Remember to Cast Your Vote for Flight Training Excellence

There is still time to cast your vote in the 2014 AOPA Flight Training Poll. The SF Bay Area is rich with quality instruction and we encourage you to recognize the fantastic instructors here at San Carlos Flight Center.

Click here to vote for your CFI. Polls are open for your input until August 23, 2014. Thank you for your support.

Safety

Learn to Lean

Pilots sometimes make it through private training without mastering proper technique for engine leaning. This impacts fuel burn, engine performance, and can impact the safety of flight. Do you know the proper way to lean your aircraft for taxiing operations, max performance climbs, enroute cruise, and descent? Grab your aircraft POH and your favorite CFI and make your mastery of engine leaning a point of pride. Your aircraft will thank you.

Staying Tight on the Radio

The control tower frequency is a precious shared resource. Keep your radio calls clean, complete, and if possible brief. Try to edit out any extraneous information.

At SQL, the average radio call is 20-30% longer than what it could be due to filler words, hesitations, and extraneous readback of non-control information. A busy airport frequency is not the place for a debate, a chat, an argument, or any conversation unrelated to the safety of flight. Protect yourself and your fellow pilots by staying tight on the radio.

Member Profile - Mario Filice

SCFC: How did you first get involved with SCFC?

MF: I have acquaintances with connections at the Flight Center. I finished my undergrad degree at St. Mary's College in May and told my previous employer that I would be looking for a job in the Bay Area. Towards the end of July, I was offered the opportunity to meet the team, the fleet, and discuss how I might contribute to moving the maintenance in house.

SCFC: How did you first become interested in aircraft maintenance?

MF: My father gave me the aviation bug when I was very young. I remember helping him rebuild a Mooney M20A and painting it red when I was 8 years old. Since then, I have tinkered with all types of machines, but I find airplanes to be the most satisfying. I really dove into aircraft maintenance in 2007 when I began working at a research and development facility in Davis that built prototype rotary engines and UAVs that had VTOL capabilities. I enrolled in the A&P program at Sacramento College and graduated in 2009. I then moved to San Jose to install avionics and became inspired by the technology and its ability to improve the safety of flight.

SCFC: What kind of experience do you have as a pilot?

MF: I learned to fly in a Cessna 150, obtained my tail wheel endorsement in a Cessna 120, earned my high performance in a Cessna 182, and then received my complex in a Cessna 210. If you can't tell, I love flying Cessna. I also have experience flying Mooney, Beechcraft, Marchetti, Piper, and a couple of experimental aircraft. I often make trips up to Washington and Northern Idaho to visit my family, and have flown very long cross country trips, sometimes across the entire United States. These trips have taught me valuable lessons about respecting weather and having to deviate because of airport closures. These challenging situations, along with my mechanical background, have helped me become a well-rounded pilot.

SCFC: What do you do for fun outside of the Flight Center?

MF: I enjoy sports such as tennis, volleyball, and of course the extreme sport of flying. I try to play tennis twice a week. I am currently flying around a Cessna 120, tail number N87F, and look forward to joining the local 120/140 club.

Right Seat Workshop on Saturday, September 6

SCFC regularly holds Right Seat Workshops that are intended to demystify flight for people that fly often as passengers with other pilots. The more you can understand about what is going on in the cockpit, the more enjoyable the flight will be, and the greater your ability to impact the safety of the flight.

Join Dan Dyer for an introduction to radio communication and air traffic control from the perspective of non-pilots. The workshop includes group breakout sessions and exercises designed to help you become more familiar with radio procedures and terms. The workshop runs 11:00am to 1:00pm and the cost is $60 for right-seaters sponsored by SCFC members, or $80 for non-members. Participants are encouraged to stay for the SCFC Monthly BBQ immediately following the workshop.

Poker Run

Saturday, August 23

What is a poker run? It's a fun game of poker that pilots play by flying to different airports, collecting cards, and assembling their best hand. We meet up at the end to turn in our best hands over an ice cream social. Bring a friend or two, play a couple of hands, and put a different spin on your Saturday flight.
