Just Arrived! Retractable Gear Piper Arrow
After months of searching for the right retractable-gear trainer, we are pleased to welcome N200KR!
This is a very well-equipped 1976 Piper Arrow that has been professionally flown & meticulously maintained since it was new. It is decked out with an updated avionics suite, including dual GNS430W Com/VLOC/GPS, panel-mounted Garmin 696, JPI EDM730 Engine Monitor, Avidyne TAS620 Traffic Processor, Sandel SN3500 Electronic HSI, and KFC200 Flight Director/Autopilot System. If all those acronyms make your eyes cross, we understand - they all add up to a highly capable IFR and commercial training airplane, and a speedy weekend getaway rental.
N200KR has just arrived and will be on the SCFC flight line in the next few days, so watch for the formal announcement with all the specs and pricing details, as well as details on our upcoming Commercial Pilot and CFI Ground Schools, April 7-10 (Commercial) and April 14-17 (CFI).

Safety
|
SQL Non-Movement Area Restrictions
Recent taxiway incidents elsewhere on the field serve as a reminder to us, the San Carlos airport community, that safety awareness is critical. Remember to brief your passengers about ramp safety and awareness. In addition to safety around airplanes, be sure to point out the non-movement area boundaries and how important it is to stay out of the areas marked "RESTRICTED AREA - AIRCRAFT ONLY". Airport surface safety is everyone's responsibility.

Flight Center Ramp Vehicle Gate Operations
Airport security ranks right up there in importance with safety. When you access the south parking area via the remote-controlled vehicle gate, pause momentarily. Before you walk away, be sure to watch the gate close behind you, making sure no one enters behind you. It only takes a few extra seconds, and helps maintain airport security.

Member Profile: Aaron Insler, CFII
Please join us in welcoming Aaron Insler to the CFI Staff. Aaron brings with him a range of flying and teaching experiences.
SCFC: What Inspired you to learn to fly?
AI: I traveled often with my family while I was growing up, and my favorite parts were the plane rides. When I got my copy of Microsoft Flight Simulator 98, I became a pretty hardcore flight sim geek all through high school. For some reason, I dropped the hobby altogether and went to college to study journalism. I soon realized that a desk job was just not for me - the sky was where I belonged. I transferred to the University of North Dakota for aviation in the fall of 2011, interned as a copilot for a small regional airline last fall, and finished last month will all of my ratings. The best decision of my life.
SCFC: What made you want to teach flying?
AI: I think that the best things in life are enjoyed with others. And since SCFC and our active community of members seem to think the same, I can't think of a better group of people for me to share my passion with. It's people who are excited about flying and eager to learn.
SCFC: What is the coolest flight or flying trip you have been on?
AI: I had the privilege of ferrying an airplane to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Over the course of two days, we departed the North East in winter conditions, stopped for fuel in the Bahamas (where we experienced the differences in ICAO flight rules and procedures), and spent a night on the beach in Puerto Rico. I really enjoyed the extra responsibilities that this adventurous and independent trip required. It was hardly "work"!
SCFC: What do you like to do when you're not flying?
AI: Enjoying the outdoors and exploring the Bay Area. I can't wait to find all of the neat running and hiking trails. I'm also a fairly dedicated (but mediocre) Crossfit enthusiast. I love sports, particularly baseball and football. I enjoy cooking, and I'm a very passionate international traveler.
I'd just like to share how excited I am by the opportunity to join what you all have established as the #1 flying community in the country. I cannot wait to share my passion for flying, my unique experiences and perspectives. I am glad to be an active member of the SCFC community.

Upwind Fundraising Goal Exceeded!
Thanks to the generosity of the SCFC pilot community, we have exceeded our 2014 Upwind fundraising goal!
We set aside the month of February to raise $12,500 to fund two full scholarships for deserving high school juniors. As of today, we have raised more than $17,000! The selection committee is in its final interview process, and plans to announce the winners next week.
Upwind Summer Scholarship Program awards full flight training scholarships to high school juniors. It is an all-expenses-paid scholarship program, starting with ground school in April, continuing with flight training all summer, and culminating in the checkride just before school starts up again. Last year's winners, Matt Moropoulos and Eric Dasmalchi, are dedicated pilots who remain highly involved in the SCFC community and Upwind program. Click here for more information.

Something for the adventure junkies! Take your favorite adventure (flying, of course) and add it to another great adventure (whitewater rafting) and you get one truly awesome day.
Fly into Placerville airport (KPVF) where our river guides will be waiting for us. They will shuttle us over to the Lower South Fork American River (Gorge Section), with 15 miles of class II-III rapids. No prior rafting experience is necessary. Student pilots are welcome! Just contact us to get a ride with another pilot or a CFI.

For this year's summer mountain flying adventure, we will take the northern route through Idaho, Montana and Wyoming - a true mountain playground for pilots! As with all FOG mountain flying adventures, we will be taking all C182s with 1 CFI and 2 pilots on board. The trip is a great opportunity to complete your C182 or G1000 avionics checkout, or earn your high performance endorsement. It promises to be an unforgettable flying adventure with plenty of room for ground-based fun as well.
