Happy 7th Anniversary SCFC Members
SCFC turned 7 this month! Congratulations to all who make our club special. The new, upstart flying club in the Bay Area has grown up and now enters maturity as the place to be at San Carlos Airport. Instead of a big event, we plan to celebrate our achievement every day for the next year.
So remember, when you see another Flight Center member on the ramp or at airports around the country, be sure and tell them "Happy Anniversary!" And stop by the front desk for your 7th anniversary pin.

The New Overnight Checkout!
Our member often make multi-day trips in our airplanes. This requires that the member get approval from the Chief Pilot prior to the flight so that the member can be briefed on the procedures for the multi-day or out-of-state flight. Now, members can be pre-approved
for repeated overnight flights.
Interested? To do this, make an appointment with the Chief Pilot office so that we can review the key considerations and procedures that impact overnight flights. Your member profile will be updated with an overnight checkout and you are all set for any future overnight flights.

Podcasting Live Across the Universe - SCFC Seminars
Last month, the SCFC Media Team took our Safety Seminar program a step farther. Audio recordings of our popular safety seminars and guest speakers can now be found on iTunes as a podcast. Listen to great information while exercising at the gym or stuck on a long commute. Selected past seminars will be added to the podcast, while new seminars will be added as time goes by.

IFR Ground School Begins March 14!

onsidering getting your instrument rating? March 14
th
is the kick-off for Instrument Ground School. The twelve-week IFR Ground School is held on Thursday nights at 6:30pm.
The instrument rating is a challenging one but also very rewarding. Having the flexibility to be able to fly on those non-VFR days can make the difference on whether you are able to depart on your planned cross country trip. Get a solid foundation for your instrument rating with the IFR Ground School. The class covers the aeronautical subjects included in the FAA Instrument Airplane knowledge test as well as the knowledge areas in the ACS for the Instrument Airplane Rating.
Upon completion of the course, you will receive an endorsement
to take the FAA knowledge Test. More details can be found on

he SCFC Squawk Process
SCFC is committed to maintaining our airplanes in excellent condition. Our members are a key part of the process as you are the eyes and ears of the club. It is important to record any discrepancies you see before your flight. Some key things to remember when making a squawk is provide details about what and when you observed a discrepancy. If you can, take a picture to include with the squawk.

Our New Member Videos are a quick way for new SCFC pilots to learn how we operate. In short segments recorded by the SCFC Special Ops team, you'll get helpful and interesting information, conveyed in a fun way. We add new videos all the time, so take a look. SCFC Pin of the Month - Seminar Presenter
 SCFC has created a number of achievement pins to encourage safe pilot skills, community involvement, and adventure travel. The latest Community achievement pin at SCFC is "Safety Seminar Presenter" and honors those members who have presented at a safety seminar, or acted as host/interviewer for a guest speaker. Your contribution of time and energy is what makes our community great.

Member Profile: Oliver Coolidge
 SCFC: How long have you been flying?
OC:
I soloed in 1969, and worked for a small charter FBO and flight school in Orange County, then moved up to Continental Airlines. In 1983, I moved to FedEx and stayed most of my career, flying over 14,000 flight hours before retiring.
SCFC: Being retired must mean you have nothing to do, right?
OC:
I keep pretty busy. I'm President of local EAA Chapter 20, and a board member of both the Hiller Aviation Museum and the Upwind Foundation. I have two airplanes that I try to fly occasionally, and two daughters (both married) and one grandchild that is 2 and certainly a future pilot.
SCFC: How did you get your nickname as the airport bum?
OC: "Airport bum" has been a term that has been around aviation forever, and if the shoe fits wear it.
SCFC: What is one of your bucket list items for this year?
OC:
Oshkosh 2019. It's got to be at least my 12th time attending. The  Cessna 195 community and Bonanza community both have gatherings that are a lot of fun, including the mass fly-in on Saturday before the show begins. I flew in with the group once, over 120 Bonanzas all together.
SCFC: How did you get involved with Young Eagles and Upwind?
OC:
I have known about Young Eagles for a long time through EAA, and started flying it, and then got drafted to be president of EAA Chapter 20 at San Carlos. I first encountered the Upwind Foundation by attending the Wine and Cheese party a few years back, and then was asked to be on the Board. I like being on boards. I think every group needs someone on the board who applauds the good ideas. Everyone can't be the guy who brings the good ideas.

March 2nd, FOG visit to ORBIS at Moffett Field
This is a life-changing MD-10 accredited teaching hospital that travels around the world carrying the most advanced gear available to perform eye surgeries and teach others the skills to do the same. This enormous airplane does it all - carries the hospital itself, creates hospital-grade oxygen on demand, purifies water, and uses its own Jet A fuel to power generators tucked into the hold.
This large-cargo-jet-turned-eye-hospital (donated by FEDEx) is the most  visible presence of Orbis International, a global force bent on stamping out diseases of the eye that otherwise leave the most vulnerable without hope.
The plane travels around the world with a volunteer crew complete with FedEx pilots, maintenance technicians, doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists, IT specialists, accountants, and just about any other discipline you'd find in a hospital in a major city.
And now FOG is privileged to say, we've been on this extraordinary aircraft.

We can't think of a better way start your Saturday! This month we fly to Modesto for breakfast and fuel at the CAF Hangar at Modesto (KMOD). Eggs, pancakes, sausage or bacon are served with all the support dishes everyone is used to...beans, fruit, juice and coffee. Still just $6!

This month we will hold the Full Moon Flyer Flight on Wednesday March 20th (the full moon night) and meet at Harris Ranch (3O8) at 7 pm. This is an awesome flight with tons of learning opportunities, as well as good food. Even better, there is a 10% discount if you show your pilot's certificate to your server. The airstrip is narrow so use those rudders!

Countdown to 5-Day Yellowstone Mountain Trip
June 26 - 30 (Wed - Sun)
 The countdown to June's FOG Yellowstone trip has begun and this trip has it all! Five days and four nights of challenging, spectacular, exhilarating flying adventure combined with a mountain backdrop. Safety in numbers as you practice mountain flying in the Rocky Mountains with a CFI on board and in the company of several other planes. Experience incredible photo opportunities as you fly stunning mountain passes, take in the beauty of Yellowstone and Glacier National Park, and cruise the majestic Columbia River on the way to the final stop in Portland. We launch early in the morning on Wednesday, June 26 and return late Sunday, June 30.
