 New Year, New Ground Schools
After a winter hiatus, Ground School classes begin anew this week at San Carlos Flight Center. Our 12-week group course covers the breadth of knowledge required by a Private Pilot, with special emphasis placed on the material covered by the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test for Airplanes.
Private Pilot Ground School kicks off with this Sunday, January 8th from 10:00am-1:00pm and Tuesday, January 10th from 6:30-9:00pm with Herb Patten.

Fly in Style with David Clark Loaners
The Flight Center now has 14 David Clark
headsets for members to use as loaner headsets. If you are going on a longer flightor you want to impress your passenger, ask the front desk and they will check out a headset to you. Your crew will want to fly with you more often since they will be flying in comfort and style.

 Call for Upwind Applications
The Upwind Foundation, now in its fifth year of operation, has released the 2017 scholarship applications and program dates. Upwind aims to provide flight and ground training for a high school student to prepare them to obtain their Private Pilot certificate during the summer between their junior and senior year.

 Rusty Pilot
Has the busy holiday season kept you from flying? Do you feel like you traded all your airspace knowledge for memorizing the lyrics to Jingle Bells? Feeling like you can not get back into aviation? Well, fear not... For San Carlos Flight Center is here with the Rusty Pilot seminar, January 14th at 7:00pm! Join other rusty pilots as we talk about some of the things that might have taken us away from flying, as well as how to regain the proficiency that makes us feel like masters of our domain in the sky.
A rusty pilot is someone that, for one reason or another, stopped flying. In the Rusty pilot seminar, SCFC Chief Pilot Dan Dyer will review what it means to be a rusty pilot, as well as ways for pilots to get safely back in the air following a long absence from aviation.

Maintain Proficiency with Soft-Field Takeoff and Landings
In training we cover takeoff and landings on soft fields, but apart from that, many pilots don't use those skills on actual soft fields leading to a lack of experience or perspective about actual soft field operations.
The essence of a soft field takeoff or landing, is to be light on the wheels, keep moving, and use your wheel brakes sparingly. We are trying to avoid having the airplane sink into the soft surface and get stuck or possibly nosing over. In a tricycle gear airplane, apply full back-pressure to keep the nose wheel light and prevent the nose from sinking into the surface. Use the recommended flap setting to allow the airplane to become airborne at a lower airspeed and set off the soft surface.
During your roll-out keep applying back-pressure to keep the nose just off the ground, by time the nose gear touches down you want to have full back-pressure applied and continue to hold full back pressure until you are off of the soft surface.
On January 27-30
th
, join CFI Thomas Daniel for a trip to Baja California, Mexico for a whale watching adventure! During this trip there are scheduled stops at airports that only have soft surface runways.

 Post-Holiday Weight and Balance
The holiday season is a wonderful time for cookies, cakes, hot chocolate, brownies, ice cream, and gaining weight. Pilots be reminded to not fall victim to complacency when it comes to weight and balance calculations (or holiday diets). Make sure you re-weigh yourself before your next flight because you may have gained a couple of pounds due to those heavy winter clothes.
Make sure to weigh baggage on a scale and include baggage in all weight and balance computations. SCFC members, can take advantage of the online weight and balance materials.

Member Profile: Caitlin Lyons
 SCFC: What inspired you to learn to fly?
CL: My fiance is an airline pilot and every time he came home from a trip I just wanted to hear more and more about flying. Soon hearing about it was not enough for me, I needed to get into the cockpit myself and experience flight.
SCFC: Tell us a bit about the scholarship that you received?
CL:
It was a scholarship I saw advertised on the bulletin board at SCFC from the Alameda 99s. I am always on the lookout for opportunities to help fund my flying. I was excited to get the call about winning and couldn't wait to put it to good use. This scholarship was a physical application with recommendations. I filled out the form along with an essay and two letters of recommendations from fellow pilots. The 99s is an interesting organization that has been around since Amelia Earhart helped found it in 1929, and I am a part of the Bay Cities Chapter (which is the second oldest chapter, besides the founding chapter) and I love their involvement within the community from outreach to the younger generation to planning fly-outs and tours!
SCFC: What is your next big aviation goal? 
CL:
Right now, I'm working on flying with more precision and in hopes to get my instrument rating once I build some flight time. I love flying for fun and I do not want to be a professional pilot since I am already an airline dispatcher, but I love sharing my passion and want to help inspire the next generation of aviators.
SCFC: What has been your favorite part about learning to fly? Biggest challenge?
 CL:
I love the getaway it provides. I am allowed to set aside everything I may be worried about in life and focus on the task at hand when flying and throw myself into a new challenge every flight. While in contrast, a big challenge for me is to stay in the moment during the flight and not let a slip up affect the rest of my flight.
SCFC: What are your interests outside of aviation?
CL:
I used to work in theater in New York which is still a passion of mine. In my spare time, I'm taking piano lessons, a writing class, and I volunteer at a cat shelter.

The Collective 
A new year is the perfect time to check out SCFC's new helicopter pilot group, The Collective. It does not matter if you're a seasoned helicopter pilot, student pilot or just interested in starting out, now is the perfect time to join!
January 9th
will be a great discussion on Helicopter Inadvertent IMC (instrument meteorological conditions). We will review guidance from the International Helicopter Safety Team on how to avoid IIMC, and what immediate actions you should take should you encounter IIMC. As well as discussion on scenario based and simulator based training methods, which will no doubt aid in real world flying.
The Collective is a group for helicopter pilots by helicopter pilots. Finally there is a place for the helicopter pilots of the Bay Area to come together, learn about cool topics in more detail, listen to exciting guest speakers, analyze specific accidents or events in the industry, and have engaging conversations about everybody's aviation story.

 FLAG Salutes Women in Maintenance - January 11
Join Fly Like a Girl (FLAG) on
January 11th
as we go behind the scenes with aviation mechanics Angie Capriotti, Samantha Bloodhart, and Alex Strehlow for a conversation about what it's like to be a A&P mechanic and help work on aircraft. They will share with us the highlights of their journey in aviation, discuss what it takes to become a A&P mechanic, and share what the future of the industry is shaping out to be. Capriotti and Bloodhart will then open the floor to take questions from the women in the audience and answer anything you've ever wanted to ask a mechanic before.

FlyOutGroup Lunch (Jan 12th) and Dinner (Jan 22nd) Flights 
The Bay Area FlyOutGroup is kicking off the new year with two dining flights. First, on

a Full Moon Flyers dinner flight to Concord (KCCR) at Vineyards Chop House. The perfect spot for a delicious new year meal after the holidays. Later on in the month on

join us for lunch at Watsonville as FOG grubs at Ella's. FOG pilots fuel up your aircraft and go wheels up for the first FOG event of 2017!

 FOG Santa Barbara Weekend January 13 -14 (Fri - Sat)
Celebrate the new year with the Bay Area FlyOutGroup (FOG) as we head down to Santa Barbara (KSBA) for a delightful flight and a delicious lunch at Beachside Bar-Café at the Goleta Beach County Park.
Plan to arrive at
12:00pm
at the Santa Barbara Airport. We will park and meet at Atlantic Aviation. Most of us will be enjoying the 20 minute walk down through the park to the restaurant.
Please RSVP so we can make reservations as we usually take up two long tables as this is a very popular flight. Let me know if you have seats or need a ride. This is a good flight to grab your CFI for a long cross country. We hope to see you all there!

International Waters Baja Whales January 27 - 30 (Fri - Mon)
To kick off the new year the right way, the FOG will be joinging CFI Thomas Daniel to fly down to Baja California and experience the best whale watching on the planet. Plan to leave in the afternoon on Friday, January 27th and return Monday evening for a total of 2,000 nm flying distance, about 18 hours Hobbs in a Cessna 182. As an added bonus, the trip includes landing on two dirt strips to practice real soft landings.
