It's the day children of all ages have been waiting for all year long: Halloween. But before the little ones go out trick or treating, there are some things you can do to make sure they have a safe and fun time.
- Always have an adult with the children while they trick or treat. Trick or treat in groups.
- Trick or treat before nightfall.
- Don't let children eat candy without checking it first.
- Make sure costumes are reflective so anyone can see them in the dark.
- If your children are wearing a mask, make sure they can breathe well and see where they are going.
- Have a flashlight handy.
- Drive slowly when going through neighborhoods with kids trick or treating.

Teen Driver Safety Week
National Teen Driver Safety Week is October 18-24. Here in the United States, car crashes are a leading cause of death for teenagers between 15 and 19-years old.
Learning how to drive a car is an exciting part of being a teenager. Parents play a big role in teaching their children how to be responsible drivers.
The Sheriff's Department urges parents to take the time to talk to their young drivers about the dangers of:
- Alcohol (NEVER drink and drive)
- Seat Belts (ALWAYS buckle up)
- Texting (keep your eyes on the road)
- Speeding (SLOW DOWN)
- Passengers (extra passengers can be a distraction)
The Sheriff's Department has created a FREE class for new teenage drivers (and their parents) to learn all about being responsible behind the wheel.
Click on the above video to learn more about the Sheriff's Start Smart class. You can also watch the video by following the Sheriff's Department on VIMEO.
