San Diego County Sheriff - January 2015
San Diego County Sheriff
Welcome to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Newsletter

As we move through the holiday season and into the new year, I'd like to take this opportunity to reflect on some of the things the Sheriff's Department has done to keep you safe.

In 2014, we opened the Rancho San Diego Sheriff's Station and the new Las Colinas Women's Jail in Santee.

I am proud of these state-of-the art-facilities, which allow us to make a positive difference in the lives of the people we are sworn to protect.

In this e-newsletter, you will learn about some of the wonderful things our deputies have done during the holiday season.

We encourage you to join us at the Martin Luther King Junior Parade on January 18.

It's always an honor to meet the public and hear about how we can better serve you.

I want to thank all of our deputies for their outstanding work in 2014.

I also want to thank YOU for working with the Sheriff's Department by getting involved and reporting suspicious activity.  I look forward to what we can do together in 2015 to make San Diego the safest urban county in the nation.

Man Exposes Himself In San Marcos

  Suspicious Man

Take a good look at this sketch of a man who is wanted for exposing himself to a girl in San Marcos.

It happened just after 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 2nd near South Rancho Santa Fe Road and Las Cruces Avenue.

The victim told deputies she was walking to San Marcos High School when she was approached by a man asking for directions to Palomar College.

She tried to show the suspect using the map function on his cell phone, which he was holding at waist level. That's when the victim realized he was exposing himself.

She immediately ran away and reported the incident to San Marcos High School administrators and the Sheriff's Department.

The man was wearing sunglasses, a black jacket and faded blue jeans.

If you recognize the man in this sketch or have information on this incident, call the Sheriff's non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.

You can remain anonymous and be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.  Call Crime Stoppers at

(888) 580-8477.

Nine minors were arrested in the sweep which focused on the communities of Rancho San Diego, Lemon Grove, Spring Valley and unincorporated areas of La Mesa and El Cajon.

Curfew in the City of Lemon Grove begins at 11:00 p.m.  Curfew for unincorporated areas of the county begins at 10:00 p.m.  Curfews last through 6:00 a.m.

During those hours, minors can't be out in public unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian, working or taking part in a school or religious activity.

Minors found in violation of curfew laws were taken in the back of patrol cars to the Rancho San Diego Sheriff's Station where their parents picked them up.

Before the minors were released to their parents, they met with a juvenile detective to discuss the dangers of violating curfew laws.

  Where Is Cynthia Dyann Coleman?
Cold Case
The Sheriff's Homicide Detail wants your help in solving the suspicious disappearance of an East County woman nearly 30 years ago.

On September 3, 1986, Cynthia Dyann Coleman, 23, left her home on the Barona Indian Reservation to go to a nearby supermarket to give away a litter of kittens.

Cynthia's mother reported her daughter missing a few days later after she failed to return home and made no contact with her family.  At the time of her disappearance, Cynthia had "Fats" tattooed on her right hand and "Lady" tattooed on her left hand.

If you have any information on the suspicious disappearance of Cynthia Dyann Coleman , call the Sheriff's Homicide Detail

Operation Secret Santa
Secret Santa

This holiday season, Secret Santas and Sheriff's Deputies teamed up to spread happiness and joy to families in need across the county.

Click on the video above to see these heartwarming moments.  You can also watch the video on our Vimeo Channel.

Three local businessmen with big hearts reached into their pockets and decided to make a difference.  They generously donated more than $17,000 in cash to people in need of holiday cheer.  All they asked was to remain anonymous.

On Saturday, December 20th, the Secret Santas went on a ride-along with deputies carrying cash.  They went to Alpine, Casa De Oro, Encinitas, Jamul, Ramona, Rancho San Diego, San Marcos, Spring Valley, Solana Beach and unincorporated areas of La Mesa.

Deputies knocked on the doors of people recommended by schools, churches, apartment managers and resource centers.  They handed out between $100 and $500.

There were lots of hugs, smiles and even tears of joy.

Deputies were happy to be Santa's Helpers and were touched by the reaction of the people they serve.

Vista Station Brightens Holidays For Child

   Vista Sheriff's Station
The Vista Sheriff's Station is making sure a young boy going through a difficult time has a very happy holiday.

Six-year-old Oliver was watching a movie when his father suffered a medical emergency and died in their apartment.

Oliver is now living with his maternal grandmother in Florida.  All he was able to take with him was a duffel bag full of clothes.

When the staff of the Vista Sheriff's Station heard about what Oliver had gone through, they decided they wanted to do something special for him.

They began collecting money and gift cards to help Oliver's grandmother take care of him.  They also bought toys and clothes to send to Oliver in Florida.

Businesses in Vista heard about Oliver's story and wanted to help too.  They donated gifts for Oliver.  One business even agreed to ship the gifts to Florida for free!

To make things even more joyous for Oliver, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Department in Florida arranged for Santa Claus and deputies to deliver the gifts in a special motorcade on Christmas Eve.

Kudos to the Vista Sheriff's Station for working with the community and other law enforcement agencies to brighten a child's holiday.

    New SAR Jackets

  New SAR Jackets

Volunteers with Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) are always on call and brave the elements for missing person searches and other emergencies.

Recently, the San Diego Honorary Deputy Sheriff's Association (HDSA) made a generous donation that allowed for the purchase of new Search and Rescue jackets for each volunteer.

The waterproof jackets will keep SAR volunteers warm and dry when they're out in the field.
