Wearing a seat belt isn't just the law: it could mean the difference between life and death.

This month, the Sheriff's Department is cracking down on people who don't wear their seat belts.

The Click It or Ticket campaign will run from May 18 to May 31.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly half of the 21,132 passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2013 were not wearing seat belts.

Be aware that deputies are ALWAYS looking for drivers who aren't following California's seat belt laws.

"It's the first thing everyone should do when they get inside a car," said Sheriff Bill Gore.  "Buckling up is not only the law, but it can save your life in the event of a crash."

Anyone caught not wearing their seat belt may be cited. A first offense will cost you a minimum of $161 plus court fees.

Remember to always wear your seat belt ... CLICK IT OR TICKET!!!

New Sheriff's ASTREA Helicopter

ASTREA

Recently, Sheriff Bill Gore, Supervisors Bill Horn and Dianne Jacob and Sheriff's ASTREA (Aerial Support to Regional Enforcement Agencies) unveiled a new patrol helicopter.

Click on the video above to learn more about the Bell 407GX.  You can also watch the video by following the Sheriff's Department on VIMEO.

The $4.8 million aircraft will be used for patrol, search and rescue operations, as well as firefighting missions. A helicopter bucket (known as a "Bambi Bucket") can be attached to help with water drops in case of a wildfire.

Among the new features is a glass cockpit. It gives critical flight information at a glance for greater awareness and safety. The crew is made up of a Pilot and a Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) and both are Sheriff's Deputies. The crew communicates with ground personnel, operates the search light, public announcement or PA system, infrared camera, map system, etc.

The Bell 407GX can carry five passengers.

The Sheriff's Department is also in the process of purchasing another Bell 205 firefighting helicopter. It will increase the agency's firefighting helicopters to three and we expect delivery in Fall 2015.

By the end of 2015, the Sheriff's fleet will have nine helicopters. Six are dedicated to 24/7 law enforcement operations. Three for daytime firefighting and search and rescue operations.
