San Diego County Sheriff
Welcome to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Newsletter

The holiday season is an especially busy time for the Sheriff's Department.  It's important to us to make sure your communities are safe for you and your loved ones; not just during the holidays, but all year long.

In this month's newsletter, you will learn all about our Holiday Watch crime prevention initiative.  When you go shopping or are out in the community, you will see our deputies and other Sheriff's personnel working hard to protect you from criminals.

Do the responsible thing and don't drink and drive this holiday season.  If you get caught drinking and driving, you will go to jail.  We need your help in reporting drivers under the influence by calling 9-1-1.  Working together, we can keep San Diego's roadways safe.

There are many FREEE services the Sheriff's Department offers to keep you and your families safe.  From vacation checks to the You Are Not Alone program for the elderly, we are committed to protecting and serving you.

On behalf of the Sheriff's Department, I want to wish you a happy holiday season and a happy new year.

Stay safe,

Bill Gore, Sheriff
San Diego County

The holiday season is a time for family and celebration.  It's also a time when some drivers will get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

From December 16th to January 1st, Sheriff's Deputies will be conducting additional DUI patrols to find impaired drivers before they hurt or kill someone.  Deputies will also take part in DUI checkpoints in Sheriff's contract cities throughout the month of December.

Operation Giving Back

Operation Giving Back

Sheriff's Deputies are giving back to the communities they serve and protect just in time for the holidays.

The day before Thanksgiving (thanks to the help of a generous donor), deputies handed out $24,000 in cash to families, people and organizations in need.

Click on the above video to watch highlights from Operation Giving Back.  You can also watch the heartwarming video by following the Sheriff's Department on VIMEO.

Every day, Sheriff's Deputies encounter people in need while they are out on patrol. They reach into their own pockets to lend a helping hand.

A community member, who wishes to remain anonymous, heard about these stories and decided to make a difference. He went on a ride-along with deputies all across the Sheriff's Department jurisdiction from the north, south and east counties giving cash to those who could use the extra help.

The recipients include organizations such as shelters that help domestic violence victims and runaways or at-risk youth, foster parents who take in children with special and medical needs and a senior center that feeds seniors who can't pay for their meals.

Deputies also visited local thrift shops and families referred by churches, schools and resource centers.

The Sheriff's Department wants to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season!

    WANTED
  Suspicious Person - Alpine
Annoying A Child Suspect - Alpine
Take a good look at the sketch of this man.  He is wanted for following a 16-year old girl in his car in Alpine.

It happened on November 4 and November 18, 2015.  The girl told deputies she was followed by a man driving an older model tan Toyota Camry or similar vehicle while she was walking near Alpine Boulevard and West Victoria Drive.

On November 4th, the suspect drove up to the girl and asked if she needed a ride to her car.  When she ran away, the suspect circled the block several times to try and find her.

On November 18th, the girl told deputies she saw the man again as she was walking to school and he followed her to the bus stop.  He never got out of the car.  The girl was not able to get the license plate number of the car.

The girl describes the suspect as a heavy set, dark-skinned Black man between 65-70 years old.  He was bald, but had a mustache and was wearing wire-rimmed glasses.

Anyone with information on the identity or location of the suspect is asked to call the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at
(888) 580-8477.

Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest in this case.
     SCAM ALERT:
It's NOT the IRS!!!
Phone Scam
Your phone rings and the caller claims to be from the IRS.   The person on the line is very aggressive, even threatening you with jail time or a lawsuit if you don't pay taxes you owe to the federal government.

Anytime a caller is asking for money, IT IS A SCAM. Do not give personal information and hang up immediately.

The IRS will NEVER:
  • Call you to demand immediate payment.  The IRS will not call if you owe taxes without first sending a bill in the mail.
  • Demand you pay taxes and not allow you to question or appeal the amount you owe.
  • Require that you pay your taxes a certain way.  For instance, require that you pay with a prepaid debit card.
  • Ask for your credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
  • Threaten to bring in law enforcement agencies to arrest you for not paying.

Click on the above video to learn more about how to protect yourself from tax scams.  You can also watch the video by following the Sheriff's Department on VIMEO .

If you receive these kinds of phone calls, report it to the IRS by calling (800) 366-4484.   If you know you owe or think you may owe tax, call the IRS at (800) 829-1040.  For more tips, click here.

   Honoring A War Hero
The Sheriff's Department wants to recognize the hard work, dedication and sacrifice of Sheriff's Reserve Captain Ken Pipes.

Click on the above video to learn about Captain Pipes' incredible life and devotion to his country.  You can also watch the video by following the Sheriff's Department on VIMEO

We pick up Captain Pipes' story in early 1968 at Khe Sanh, the Vietnam War's longest and bloodiest battle.   It started with an ambush which turned into a 77-day battle.   Shells rained daily and the hill erupted with explosions and gunfire.

In the middle of the chaos was Captain Pipes.   Even though he was wounded in battle, he continued fighting and commanding more than 200 Marines in the Bravo Company.

For his bravery and devotion to duty in the face of danger, Captain Pipes received the Silver Star and many other medals.

We are honored to have Captain Pipes as a reserve deputy for the San Diego County Sheriff's
Department.  He has been volunteering for the department for 25 years now.   Captain Pipes oversees reserve deputies in the North County.

Just like Reserve Captain Ken Pipes, you too can make a difference by volunteering for the Sheriff's Department.  To find what volunteer opportunity suits you, visit: www.sdsheriff.net/volunteers.
