San Diego County Sheriff - May 2012
San Diego County Sheriff
Welcome to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Newsletter

The month of May is already here with a season of proms and graduations. This is a good time to remind parents and teens about the dangers of drinking and driving, as well as being a Social Host. Know your responsibility and liability as a social host. Special events should be remembered and not regretted.

Also inside this month's newsletter, we discuss the dangers of bottle bombs - also known as dry ice bombs and acid bombs. These are dangerous devices with life threatening consequences. We have included a photograph and description of one inside this newsletter. If you see one - do not touch it - call 911 immediately.

We hope you have a great month - we'd love to see you at one of the events listed inside - whether it's at the Senior Health Fair in Santee or a behind-the-scenes tour of Juvenile Hall.

Thanks for reading and stay safe,

Bill Gore, Sheriff

Operation Tip The Scale

San Diego County Sheriff's Department - Operation Tip the Scale
Operation Tip The Scale

The Encinitas Sheriff's Station led Operation Tip The Scale this month in North County beach areas. It's the first such operation in Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe and Carlsbad. More than 200 Sheriff's Deputies, police officers and treatment professionals took part in sweeps that netted 31 arrests and 14 treatment conversations with suspected drug users. The San Diego Sheriff's Department and its partner agencies including the Meth Strike Force launched Operation Tip The Scale in 2009 to reduce drug-related crime in targeted neighborhoods. The ultimate goal for any Tip The Scale Operation is to reduce drug-related crime by ensuring the targets abide by their court orders and stay clean. If you know someone who needs help, call 1-877-NO-2-METH (1-877-662-6384) or go to www.no2meth.org. Click on the image above to watch the video or follow us on View our videos on YouTube

Bottle Bombs
 http://www.sdsheriff.net/lesb_bombarson.html
It's a dangerous prank that has people posting videos all over the Internet. Bottle bombs are commonly referred to as "dry ice bombs" and "acid bombs." In other parts of the country, bottle bombs are being detonated in mail boxes and lawns. The bottles contain a combination of household cleaning products and aluminum foil or water and dry ice creating pressure. When the bottle can no longer hold the pressure, it explodes. Jagged and sharp pieces of the plastic become shrapnel which in turn causes injury. The chemicals can cause severe burns and breathing problems. The Sheriff's Bomb/Arson Unit says three people were hurt in bottle bomb explosions in San Diego County last year. This is a serious crime. People caught setting off bottle bombs can face felony charges which means time in prison. If you see a bottle bomb, DO NOT TOUCH IT. These devices are unstable and can explode at any moment. Maintain a safe distance and call 911. To learn more about the Sheriff's Bomb/Arson Unit, click here
