San Diego County Sheriff - October 2014
San Diego County Sheriff
Welcome to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Newsletter

October is National Crime Prevention Month. The Sheriff's Department always has events planned designed to keep you and your loved ones safe. In this month's newsletter, you will learn how you can get involved.

Crime Stoppers is celebrating 30 years of solving cold cases and bringing fugitives on the run to justice. Help make your community safer by joining us at the Light the Night Against Crime 5K in Balboa Park. The family-friendly event has a fun Halloween theme and raises money to support Crime Stoppers' efforts to catch criminals.

Join us at the Walk Like MADD event to help raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. One of our deputies was killed in the line of duty by a drunk driver a few years ago. We honor Deputy Ken Collier's memory by encouraging everyone to join us in the Walk Like MADD.

The Sheriff's Department is hiring! We are looking for talented and qualified men and women who want to make a difference in their communities. Join us at the Miramar Air Show where you can talk to Sheriff's recruiters about careers with the agency.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Sheriff's Department takes all allegations of domestic violence seriously. Read about the many resources available if you or someone you know has been the victim of domestic violence.

Halloween is a fun time for children. It's never too early to think about keeping your kids safe. In this newsletter, read about how to protect them from possible danger on Halloween.

 Halloween Safety

    Trick or Treat

It's the day children of all ages have been waiting for all year long: Halloween.   But before the little ones go out trick or treating, there are some things you can do to make sure they have a safe and fun time:

  • Always have an adult with the children while they trick or treat.  Trick or treating in groups is also a good idea.
  • Trick or treat before nightfall.
  • Don't let children eat candy without checking it first.
  • Make sure costumes are reflective so anyone can see them in the dark.
  • If your children are wearing a mask, make sure they can breathe well and see where they are walking easily.
  • Have a flashlight handy.
  • Drive slowly when going through neighborhoods with kids trick or treating.

Sheriff's Deputies will also be out in full force on Halloween looking for drunk drivers.  Remember: BUZZED DRIVING IS DRUNK DRIVING

Wanted Fugitive

Wanted Fugitive
Every month, the Sheriff's Department works with the San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force (FTF) and Crime Stoppers to find and arrest people wanted for committing crimes.

Be on the lookout for Tyler Brett Love.  He is wanted on charges of burglary, theft and buying or receiving a stolen vehicle.  Love is known to frequent Oceanside and Vista.

Anyone with information on Love's whereabouts is urged to call the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477. You could be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

National Fire Prevention Week

May 2014 Wildfires

Are you ready in the event a fire breaks out in your home or community?  National Fire Prevention Week is the week of October 5th.  It's the perfect time to make sure you and your family have a plan in place in the event of a fire.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends you test your home's smoke alarms every month to make sure they are working.  Change the batteries if needed.  Also, make sure there is a smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home.  Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years.

It's also a good idea to check your carbon monoxide alarms in your home.

Here in San Diego County, wildfires are a year-round threat.  The Sheriff's Department is working with the County of San Diego and CAL Fire to raise awareness about wildfire preparedness.

The county has leased an additional firefighting helicopter that will join the Sheriff's own firefighting helicopters to battle possible wildfires this fall.  To read what Sheriff Bill Gore said at a recent news conference about what to do should a wildfire break out, follow us on Like us on Facebook.

Remember: being prepared for a fire could save your life.  For more information, visit: www.sdcountyemergency.com.

Dogs and Divers Train Together

Every day, volunteers play an important role in supporting the Sheriff's Department in its mission to keep you safe.

Recently, volunteers with the Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) K-9 Unit and Dive Team trained together for the first time at Lake Henshaw.

The scenario involved a capsized boat and a search for a drowning victim.  The Sheriff's Dive Team called on the SAR K-9 Unit to help them narrow the search area.  The exercise helps volunteers to understand the capabilities of each unit during a call out.

Click on the above video to watch the historic training unfold.  For photos, follow us on Like us on Facebook.

The 15 members of the Sheriff's Dive Team come from diverse backgrounds such as the military, medicine, law and firefighting.  They are all scuba certified.  They are called in 24 hours per day to find human remains, weapons and stolen goods that are tossed into shallow and deep waters.

The Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) Unit performs wilderness and urban rescues, as well as search for missing and at-risk persons.  Teams are available at all times to respond to local, state and federal agency requests.
