San Diego County Sheriff
Welcome to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Newsletter

I'm so glad you enjoy our newsletter - we enjoy showcasing some of the recent events and activities our department has been involved in since our last message. Of particular note this month is the new law that make it illegal to sell, dispense, furnish, administer or provide Spice or Bath Salt-type products. I joined District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and other community leaders in a forum to explain these new laws and the serious consequences young people risk when ingesting these materials.

Just below this message is our first article discussing our crackdown on texting and driving. Did you know texting while driving equates to the same motor skills as if you measured a .08 on an alcohol breathalyzer?   Is it worth your life to send a text or tweet?

Thanks again for reading our newsletter!

Stay safe,
Bill Gore, Sheriff
San Diego County

Texting and Driving Crackdown

Put the Phone Down and Pay Attention to the road

Join the Sheriff's Department's It's Not Worth It campaign this February. Texting while driving is not only a danger to yourself, but to everyone else on the road around you. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finds drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves or others. Deputies will be out in force to ensure drivers are not engaging in this deadly behavior.

  • The fine for a first offense of texting or using a hand-held cell phone while driving is $159 more , with subsequent violations being much higher.

The Sheriff's Department encourages you to devote your full attention to driving while behind the wheel. Distracted driving - "It's Not Worth It."
