San Diego County Sheriff - September 2012
San Diego County Sheriff
Welcome to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Newsletter

With many schools starting this month around the county, it's never been more important to emphasize teen driving and safety. Imperial Beach is hosting a Teen Driver Safety Course on Saturday, September 15th. One of the elements will emphasize the dangers of texting while driving. Make sure your teen has a DESIGNATED TEXTER in the car and that the driver does not text while behind the wheel. A text message is not worth your life.

We have another homicide cold case dating back to 1987, in which we need the public's help to solve this mystery. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Sheriff's Homicide tip line or San Diego County Crime Stoppers.

Speaking of Crime Stoppers, please join us in the Crime Stoppers 26th Annual Light the Night Against Crime 5K. This is a fun event the entire family can enjoy. Bring your best costume and help us fight crime on Saturday, October 27th!

Thanks for reading and stay safe.

Jail Postcard Policy

 Jail Postcard Only Policy

Beginning September 1, 2012, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department will adopt a new incoming mail policy for its seven jails. It means the only acceptable form of incoming mail will be postcards and electronic mail (email). Incoming letters will no longer be accepted and will be returned to sender. Mail postmarked before September 1st will be accepted and delivered. The only exception to this new rule is legal mail between the inmate and an attorney, courts and/or other law enforcement or government agencies. The goal is to promote safety by limiting contraband such as drugs and weapons from being smuggled into jails via envelopes. For more information, click here.

Teen Driver Safety Event on September 15th

It may sound dangerous, but deputies will have teens in Imperial Beach "text and drive" through an obstacle course. With Sheriff's Deputies by their side, students will experience first-hand the dangers of distracted driving while texting as they navigate a golf cart through an obstacle course. The safety event will be held at the parking lot of Mar Vista High School. Teens will also go through the course wearing so-called "beer goggles." The goggles are designed to impair vision replicating the blood alcohol level of a drunk driver. By experiencing these situations themselves in a safe, controlled environment we hope teens change the way they think about drunk and distracted driving.  An SUV involved in a deadly DUI crash in Santee will be on display. It is used in the Sheriff's Start Smart classes, a free two-hour class for new teen drivers and their parents or guardians. To learn more about the next Start Smart class in your area, click here.

Attend a Start Smart Class

Start Smart Class @ Viejas Training Center 4/17 @ 7PM

It's back to school. If you have a teenager who is now starting to drive, we urge you to take a Sheriff's Start Smart class with your son or daughter.

Since June 2010, free Start Smart classes have been regularly offered to new drivers and their parents/guardians so they clearly understand their responsibilities when a teen starts to drive. A wrecked SUV from a deadly DUI crash is on display to emphasize the dangers of drunk and distracted driving. The class also clarifies the restrictions of a provisional license and social host rules in the county. Participants also hear from people who have lost loved ones in drunk driving crashes.

The American Medial Association or AMA says car crashes are still the leading cause of death for teenagers. The Sheriff's Department is dedicated to saving lives and reducing injuries on the roads.
