Our International Week was a great success. Last Thursday, children dressed up in their native costumes, representing 28 of the school's 40 different nationalities. Each costumed child was introduced by an older student who gave a brief explanation about the country and the native attire. The chorale of preschool and kindergarten children sang John Lennon's classic, "Imagine," and other peace songs during the celebration.
Many parents attended the cultural presentation, a true reflection of our school's international spirit.

Thanks to the excellent participation of our preschoolers in the last Jog-a-thon, we were able to order brand new easy-build bricks. The children were very excited when we opened the box and they got to play with the easy-build bricks. They let their imaginations soar, pretending to be a train conductor or an architect or building a wall high enough to hide behind or constructing a pretend house.
Other items have been ordered such as a fun tube tunnel, additional basketballs for the Kindergarten students, and hop bouncer balls.

There has been tremendous excitement on the campus the past few weeks with the preparation of the gala. A very dedicated team of parent volunteers have given their time to make sure the event will be successful. We are all looking forward to a very warm and heartfelt gathering of our school community. I'm also thinking about all the parents who cannot attend this year, some who are out of town or are not able to participate this year for a variety of reasons. The gala is essentially for
your
children. Yes, it is a fundraiser and it costs to attend, but next year all of our students will enjoy the benefits. We have wonderful new campus projects in store for you and we hope the money raised will help us achieve them: new outdoor learning spaces, new landscaping in the play areas, more shade, and theater workshops that will complement the music and art program, to name just a few. If you cannot attend the "Soirée in the French Quarter" annual gala, rest assured there will be other opportunities before the end of the year to be part of the SDFAS community.
Enjoy reading the Écho!
Christian Jarlov, Head of School
Chers parents,

SPRING EGG HUNT
La chasse aux oeufs
Signs of a colorful spring magically appeared last Friday, March 25th, when the preschoolers enjoyed their annual egg hunt. The children moved quickly to find all the hidden eggs and fill their baskets. They all enjoyed their chocolate treasures!

SPRINGTIME FOR POETRY AT SDFAS
Le Printemps des Poètes à l'école
Pictured here are a selection of poems which were displayed at SDFAS last Tuesday and Wednesday. The students felt inspired to write some beautiful poetry. From 1st to 8th grade, everyone really enjoyed the time they dedicated to poetry and personal expression.

SDFAS students were invited to be on the CW6 morning show last week to promote the upcoming annual fundraiser with the gala chairs Nicoletta Mazis and Mireille DesRosiers. We displayed art made by the students, which will be available at the auction, Nicoletta talked about our delicious desserts that will be on the tables at the gala, and Mireille gave a big nod to our cultural diversity and bilingual immersion program. Thanks to the students for a picture perfect performance on camera: Aiden, Olivia, Claire, Annabelle, Aimée, Francesca, Enzo, and Chase.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPIRIT WEEK
The Middle School enjoyed Spirit Week at the end of March -- a simple, fun, community building time where students dress up following a different theme each day. The students also voted to help choose the themes: Decade Day (dress up like someone from the 1920's...50's, 60's, 80's, etc.); Twins and Triplets Day; Favorite Character Day (book, movie, tv show, video game); Pajama Day with bagel breakfast provided by our Room Parents; Crazy Hair-Crazy Hat Day.

Every year, teachers at SDFAS participate in the Rallye Math contest, which is a mathematics contest organized by the French association AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad). Students worked in groups in order to solve problems of various levels of difficulty. At the same time, they collaborated to make group decisions. Shown here: the 3rd grade B class working on the Rallye Math.
Last year, mathematical exercises
were
presented in English as well. There is no ranking, but students do receive a participation certificate.

On March 12th, SDFAS sent 7th grade archers Caius Pittman, Arthur Abitbol, and Audrey Vergniault, to the OAS San Diego Conference Championship. Although only a few archers from SDFAS were present, we came back with three medals and a 3rd place trophy! Caius Pittman took 2nd place in the overall San Diego Conference for middle school boys, as well as 2nd place in the championship itself. Arthur took 3rd place in the championship on the boys side, and Audrey placed 5th in the conference on the girls side. As a result of the medals we won, the school placed 3rd in the conference and we hope to bring home another trophy in the upcoming OAS state championship! The team spirit of SDFAS was vibrant as they rallied against other middle schools which included Grauer, John Muir, Muirlands, and Magnolia. We hope you will join us at the OAS state tournament where several schools in southern California will be hosted at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.
