The French Book Fair continues online! SDFAS and Bookwitty affiliate program.
I would like to thank all the students, parents and grand-parents who visited the French Book Fair and contributed to make it a success. It is always a pleasure to see some excitement around literature.
Although we received a hundred more books compared to last year, we know that the French Book Fair seems small to you compared to the English one. That's why Anne Ricart, our librarian, SDFAS and the Parents Association are proud to announce our affiliate program with Bookwitty.
A dedicated page for SDFAS has been created on their website, which includes the book selections from the fair as well as other French book recommendations. You can also find literature for grown ups, art, travel, etc. Purchase the books online and have them delivered directly to your home!
Any purchase made on the site using the link below will automatically give our school a 10% discount to grow the SDFAS library collection.
How does it works?
Once you click on the link for the first time, a "cookie" is installed on your computer. What this means is that every time you go to
bookwitty.com
, no matter the page, it will always link back any purchase made to our school account. And this will be the case for up to 45 days after the first time you clicked on that link.
The link to use for this page is HERE
To create an account and order books, follow those three easy steps.
1 -
Click on the link provided
2 -
Create an account. Shop!
3 -
Any purchase made will be linked back to the school. No code needed.
We hope this new system will give you the chance to get the books you love.
We also would like to warmly thank the volunteers who helped run the book fair all week long: Ann Amukele, Keri Belhon, Melanie Christie, Karen Gibson, Vanessa Hamilton, Chris Monghal, Linda Morales, Dima Saab, Berna Sidal, Céline Theano, Angela Whiteside. From SDFAS: Stéphanie Humbert, Laura Durant and the facility staff.
Happy reading everyone and see you next year!

"HONEY BADGERS: MASTERS OF MAYHEM"
November, 25
Our first session of sailing went very well! The students were so happy even though they had a lot of theory this time (learning the parts of the boat, about wind direction, how to navigate and cooperate on the sabot, and more).
All students passed their mandatory swim test and were able to enjoy sailing and practice their emerging skills.

Middle School: Robotics Elective
Video: Jimmy, Jaxon and Alexander
Every week, students gather in the Robotics Elective* class with Mr. Tregouet. In the Trimester 1-"Robotics Foundation" elective, students are able to use computer science and coding skills to create and program robots (WeDo). This is a fantastic way to understand the use of applied mathematics and computational science, as well as get a foothold in the engineering world.

ÉDITO
The Thanksgiving holiday is almost here. And this means the school's annual Food Drive sponsored by the Humanitarian Group is in full swing. I encourage all of our students and families to participate! It feels good to help and give back. It is a great way to express our gratitude for all that we have. Indeed, in our SDFAS community, we have much for which we are thankful
and it is important to step back and recognize some of those things.
We are thankful for our wonderful teachers, who are dedicated, hard-working and inspiring. We are thankful for our students, who come to school every day, ready to learn and to do their best. And, I know that at SDFAS, we are all thankful for our community that is dynamic, diverse, and inclusive. Not to mention the "pains-choco" on Wednesdays for which we are all grateful! At your family's Thanksgiving meal this year, I encourage you to ask your children to name those people and things for which they feel particularly thankful. And also ask them what it is about their school that makes them feel happy. On behalf of SDFAS, and whether you celebrate with a French-style meal, American-style meal, or meal representing one our community's 45 other nationalities, I wish you all a very happy and meaningful Thanksgiving holiday.
Mark Rosenblum, Head of school
Chers parents,

Middle School: Math project: Giant Geometric Shapes
Collège : Projet de mathématique sur les formes géométriques géantes
In September, Mr. Moncelet (5
th
grade) and Mr. Giot (6
th
grade) decided to embark on a fun and innovative project that would give students
the
opportunity to work together on their geometry skills.
After a few workshops
during
Math class time, students
were ready
to apply their creativity and rigor to designing giant geometric shapes on the blacktop for all the community to enjoy!
On Monday November 13 and Tuesday November 14, the two groups (6B/5B on Monday and 6A/5A on Tuesday)
traced
giant 2-meter diameter shapes on the blacktop, using chalk and ropes for measurement.
The next exciting
stage
of this project will occur in two weeks, with the design of 10-meter diameter shapes. This time, students will use the sands of Pacific Beach and La Jolla Shores as their
drawing canvas

Pre-Elementary: Alternative seating in SDFAS K-C learning environment
Maternelle : Apprendre en mouvement
A growing number of studies suggest that
routinely
incorporating movement will likely increase
student
engagement
in the classroom
, and support their learning. Alternative seating is a way to work on that goal, and a tool to assist teachers
with
behavior management and on-task behavior. It provides the movement needed within the classroom to improve a child's sensory modulation and attention.
In K
-
C, SDFAS teacher Laurette
Reinhardt
raised
the height of
a table so
the
students can stand. She
also
added big blue gym balls to sit on while
students
work. Finally, she lowered a table around which students can sit, crisscross or on their knees.
Students who are engaged, focus better and for longer periods of time. They will learn more efficiently in all academic areas, including reading and language arts.

Pre-Elementary: Mini-Forum
On November 8, 2017 SDFAS pre-elementary parents were invited to see our second mini-forum. Our
star
performers this time were the Kindergarteners and for the first time this year our three classes of PK1. The presentation started with a dance from our PK1, and we saw future rock stars!
The Kindergarteners demonstrated their mastery of the French language with poems about the fall season, and closed the show with a classic French song "Dans la foret lointaine".
