Mother's Day

We Gather at Church and by Zoom

A Note from Pastor Sherri

Dear Friends,

Grace and Peace to you as we head into this glorious Spring weekend. Sunday is Mother’s Day. For many it is a day of joyful celebration and for others among us the day comes with a sense of loss. Wherever you are on this spectrum, may you feel the ever-loving presence of God who is mother and father to us all surround and hold you close. As we reflect on God’s love and the mothering love shared with and through us, no matter who we are, I offer you these three poems and writings by Pulitzer Prize winning Poet Mary Oliver.

Blessings,

Sherri

Why I Wake Early

Hello, sun in my face.

Hello, you who make the morning

and spread it over the fields

and into the faces of the tulips

and the nodding morning glories,

and into the windows of, even, the

miserable and crotchety–

best preacher that ever was,

dear star, that just happens

to be where you are in the universe

to keep us from ever-darkness,

to ease us with warm touching,

to hold us in the great hands of light–

good morning, good morning, good morning.

Watch, now, how I start the day

in happiness, in kindness.

from “Upstream”

Teach the children. We don’t matter so much, but the children do. Show them daisies and the pale helatica. Teach them the taste of sassafras and wintergreen. The lives of the blue sailors, mallow, sunbursts, the moccasin-flowers. And the frisky ones – inkberry, lamb’s-quarters, blueberries. And the aromatic ones – rosemary, oregano. Give them peppermint to put in their pockets as they go to school. Give them the fields and the woods and the possibility of the world salvaged from the lords of profit. Stand them in the stream, head them upstream, rejoice as they learn to love this green space they live in, its sticks and leaves and then the silent, beautiful blossoms. Attention is the beginning of devotion.

from "New and Selected Poems, Volume One"

To live in this world

you must be able

to do three things:

to love what is mortal;

to hold it

against your bones knowing

your own life depends on it;

and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.

Westminster Woods Reimagined Summer Programs

Camp Soulspring: Camp Soulspring is a faith-based Summer Camp that nurtures the social and spiritual development of young people by helping them create meaningful relationships between Self, Others, Nature, and God.

The Grove: Design your own custom Family Camp experience using the magic of Westminster Woods and the surrounding playground of West Sonoma County.

Woods to Waves: Continuing Westminster Woods' long trip-camp tradition, Woods to Waves gives a group of high schoolers the freedom to bond with one another through the shared discovery of Sonoma County's hidden creeks and corners, and through the collaborative sharing of their own stories and wisdom around the campfire.

Friendship Camp: Friendship Camp is a week for adults with developmental disabilities to express joy, create friendships, embrace nature, and worship God.

Inspire Services: Inspire invites guests of all backgrounds to ground themselves through a quiet and contemplative musical service, providing space for prayer and reflection.

Summer Staff: Because many religious communities are often racially segregated, Westminster Woods intentionally hires a racially diverse staff that share a common love for God, demonstrating the common love that is possible between individuals who come from different backgrounds. Our staff is dedicated to providing transformational experiences for every camper.
