Superintendent's Message

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,

I am excited to announce Discover South Bay Union, a fun opportunity to share news about our schools and our innovative programs with the community.  Please join us!  The event will be on Saturday, March 11 from 9:00-12:00, at the SBUSD Education Center (601 Elm Avenue in Imperial Beach).

We have created this opportunity for our students that might be interested in attending a new South Bay school, and for students outside of our District to enroll in programs that match their particular interests and passions. We hope to capture the hearts and minds of new students!

All of our twelve sites will be represented, including Imperial Beach and Nestor Language Academy (our K-8 schools) and VIP Village Preschool.  School staff will be available to talk about their schools and answer questions.  In addition, there will be opportunities to register for Kindergarten, get information about upcoming parent meetings for our specialty programs (including our Charter Schools), pick-up applications for Extended Learning, learn about our upcoming Preschool registration, apply for inter/intra-District transfers, and much more!

Several of our community partners, including the Boys & Girls Club, our Military School Liaison Officer, and the Padres "Pad" Squad, will also be participating.

We are thrilled to highlight our schools as well as our unique programs:
  • Bayside STEAM Academy
  • Dual Language at Sunnyslope Elementary and Nestor Language Academy
  • Visual and Performing Arts
  • Instrumental Music
  • Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)
  • No Excuses University
  • Leader in Me
We are proud to share the great news about our District with the community!  Come Discover South Bay Union!

Sincerely,

K atie McNamara
Katie McNamara, Ed.D.
District Superintendent

Innovation Caravan

In early February, students in grades 5-8 from Emory, Central, IB Charter and the Bayside STEAM Academy participated in South Bay's first Innovation Caravan.  This "traveling fair" was an opportunity for students to showcase their projects, demonstrations, and ideas.  The students visited each of the four schools and presented their projects to students, staff, and community members.

The presentations ranged in topics from stop motion filmmaking and female empowerment to robotics and recycling.  For more information about the Caravan, the students, and their projects, you may visit the Website.

Superintendent Katie McNamara is thrilled to support the Caravan.  "I am proud that we were able to offer this leadership opportunity to our students.  Thank you to the Caravan team and the Principals and teachers for encouraging our students to take risks and to approach learning with imagination and critical-thinking.  We hope to expand this program to additional schools next year and I am excited to see the great things our students create!"
Student Support & Accountability

Placement Cards
On March 6, 2017, K-5 students will be receiving yellow Placement Cards for the 2017-2018 school year. These cards inform sites of who is planning to continue attending their current school of enrollment. Please make sure to return your child/children's Placement Cards to the school office by Friday, March 10 to secure space for next year.

Transfers
Intra (schools within South Bay) and Inter-District (schools outside our District) transfers will be available to families beginning Wednesday, March 1. The window for such applications will close on Monday, May 1 in order to provide Student Support & Accountability adequate time to process the requests prior to the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

Transfers will be approved on an individual basis, determined by space in school sites and staffing needs.   If you wish to complete a transfer request for 2017-2018, all forms can be found on the District website . All requests must include proof of residency and be received in person between the hours of 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM.
School Highlight - Emory

On Thursday, February 9, Emory hosted the Tech Talk Fair for students and families.  After researching a topic of their choice, 4th grade students presented the inspiration for their idea, demonstrated their procedure or experiment, and had fun!

Our students were very creative and shared information about a variety of topics, including how and why volcanoes erupt, using a potato to generate electricity, how to make cauliflower alfredo soup, how to make a tornado in a bottle, and many other exciting topics. Emory Eagles love to learn and to share their learning with others.

School Highlight - VIP Village Preschool

On Monday, February 13, the Reading is Fun Program at VIP Village hosted a fundraiser at Sea180 Coastal Tavern. Attendees enjoyed a great meal on the beach and 15% of their food and beverage checks will go directly to the Program!  In addition, through the donation of several generous community members and businesses, the team held a silent auction for several amazing baskets.  While the final tally is not yet in, over $2,500 was raised from the auction!  All the funds will be used for the Reading is Fun program, including providing books to our youngest learners.

Thanks to the VIP team for their leadership of this event, including Cherie Maurice, Candace Reese, and Sonia Sandoval.  Kudos also to  Stephanie Allsopp, Yvonne Camacho, and Marina Vasquez for their support.

Special thanks to our generous donors and to all the community members that attended the event.

PTA Council

2017 is Ninth District PTA's 100th Anniversary, we will also celebrate the San Diego County Teachers of the Year, and present Honorary Service Awards to our most deserving community members.  Our Founder's Day Breakfast was held on February 22 at the Scottish Rite Center.

Founders' Day (February 17) is when we celebrate the legacy and work of our founders, Alice McLellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, and Selena Sloan Butler, to better the lives of every child in education, health and safety. It is a time to reflect and take pride in our achievements, and renew our commitment to be a:
  • Powerful voice for all children.
  • Relevant resource for parents.
  • Strong advocate for public education.
Our founders represented women of imagination and courage. They had a simple idea - to improve the lives and future of all children. They understood the power of individual action, worked beyond the accepted barriers of their day, and took action to change the world for all children.

SBUSD Education Foundation

Our grant session is confirmed for April! The Foundation will accept grant applications in April with funding in the fall as we did last year. We hope this will allow teachers to plan their activities more effectively by knowing if grants were awarded to them prior to the beginning of the new school year.

Not all schools applied for grants last year and we would love to include more sites in this round. Grant applications are available beginning in April on our website. Applying is easy and can be done entirely online. If you have questions please feel free to email us. We can get back to you within a day or two. Also watch for our announcement regarding a grant writing workshop.
