Clean Energy Proponent Says Fees for New Technology Cars on Track
A bill signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb that would impose an annual registration fee on owners of electric and hybrid vehicles is leaving electric vehicle enthusiasts unfazed.
"We think it's really fair," said Carl Lisek, Executive Director of South Shore Clean Cities. "By the time you add up how much fuel tax that you pay in a conventional gasoline engine, I think it'll be OK."
House Bill 1002, sponsored by Rep. Ed Soliday, R-Valparaiso, hiked a variery of taxes and fees as part of the $1.2 billion highway improvement plan geared at improving local and state roads. Starting Saturday Hoosiers will also pay an additional 10 cents per gallon of gasoline to contribute to the roads plan.
Help Support the Department of Energy's Clean Cities Program
As you may already know, the White House budget has proposed the elimination of the U.S. Department of Energy's Clean Cities program as part of its proposed 73-percent cut of the Department's overall Vehicle Technologies program. Congress will ultimately decide the fate of the Clean Cities program and its funding for next year.
South Shore Clean Cities requests that you add your organization's name to the national letter addressed to key Congressional appropriations leaders. Your participation will demonstrate the broad-based support for alternative fuels, advanced technology vehicles and the National Clean Cities Program.
