St. Clare Updates for

December 6 - 19, 2025

Greetings!

Thank you very much for the kind words and birthday wishes I have received. Your thoughtfulness touches me in many ways. This year I celebrate my “big 50,” and next year, in May, I will mark my 25th anniversary of priestly ordination. Time truly flies.

On a different note, I would like to bring to your attention a survey organized by the Archdiocese of Vancouver. You are invited to share your feedback about your pastor — in this case, me. This survey is not connected to any particular event or situation; it is being done parish by parish as a tool to help pastors grow in their ministry. I encourage you to participate. The survey is completely anonymous.

Finally, we are now in the beautiful season of Advent — a time filled with wonder and expectation. Many things are happening around us to help us see the beauty of this season: the Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast with Santa this week, our Christmas Potluck on December 13th, the Penitential Service on December 18th... Each of these events leads us closer to the coming of the Messiah.

With gratitude,

Fr. Maciej

Food for Thought . . . and for the Soul

The Little Flower as Warrior

"St Thérèse of Lisieux is beloved by many Catholics, and i count myself among them.

What is it about her that makes so many of us admire her?

For me, I think it is because she is everything I am lacking. She could have pursued missionary work and travel, but desired the cloister and prayer. She could have strived for leadership positions in the order, but was dedicated to growing in humility and virtue. She could have focused on herself and her health needs, but she put others first and hid her infirmity to not make others feel bad for her suffering. When others caused her discomfort or annoyance, instead of dwelling on how it made her feel, she would comfort and serve that person and would carry those burdens with grace.

She shows all of us that it is possible to become holy, no matter what our state in life is.

I always think of and refer to her as the ghost of the cloister because her life was hidden, and her little way was her own insight on how to grow in holiness.

Thinking about her in light of this Advent Season, she is the perfect saint to try to emulate as we prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas.

We don’t have to do grandiose things, get carried away, and get bogged down by the obligations of the season. How can we get into the giving and generous spirit when it all feels like a demand? We can fight back and make it about loving courageously in little ways as this is the path to true love.

While she strived to be childlike in the eyes of God, she was not childish, nor was she a sweet little pushover.

Christ is coming. No matter your state in life, it’s time to prepare for battle and help build His Kingdom here on earth, one small sacrifice at a time."

Prayer of St Thérèse of Lisieux

(inspired by another Warrior, St Joan of Arc)

“O Lord God of Hosts, Who has said in Thy Gospel: 'I am not come to bring peace but a sword,' arm me for combat. I burn to do battle for Thy Glory, but I pray Thee to enliven my courage…Then with holy David I shall be able to exclaim: “Thou alone art my shield; it is Thou, O Lord, Who teachest my hands to fight.”

O my Beloved! I know the warfare in which I am to engage; it is not on the open field I shall fight …I am a prisoner held captive by Thy Love; of my own free will I have riveted the fetters which bind me to Thee, and cut me off forever from the world. My sword is Love! With it – like Joan of Arc – “I will drive the strangers from the land, and I will have Thee proclaimed King” over the Kingdom of souls.

Of a truth Thou hast no need of so weak an instrument as I, but Joan, Thy chaste and valiant Spouse, has said, “We must do battle before God gives the victory.” O my Jesus! I will do battle, then, for Thy love, until the evening of my life. As Thou didst not will to enjoy rest upon the earth, I wish to follow Thine example; and then this promise which came from Thy Sacred Lips will be fulfilled in me:“If any man minister to Me, let him follow Me, and where I am there also shall My servant be, and…him my Father honour.

To be with Thee, to be in Thee, that is my one desire; this promise of fulfillment which Thou does give helps me to bear with my exile as I await the joyous Eternal Day when I shall see Thee face to face."

Mass Intentions

Dates may be subject to change without notice.

If you wish to book a Mass Intention, please send your request via email at stclareofassisi@shaw.ca giving the name of the person, whether it is for a living or deceased person, who it is from and if you have any preferences for the day of the week, a weekend mass or specific date. We will try to book your mass intention as close to the request as possible.  Please note that there may be unforeseen situations when your scheduled date may be changed without notice.

The suggested offering for a mass intention is $10 and can be brought to the office, mailed to 1320 Johnson Street, Coquitlam, V3B 4T5 or dropped in the collection box in the church. Enclose your offering in an envelope clearly marked with the name and date of your Mass intention. Your offering will go to the priest who says the mass, not to the church.

If you are unable to use email, mass intentions may be phoned in at 604-941-4800.

We are able to accept multiple Mass intentions on Fridays. For all other days, the priest can accept one intention only per day.
