St. Clare Updates for
December 7 - 20, 2024
| |
I hope and pray that you are enjoying the spirit of the Advent Season. As we prepare for Christmas, let us remember to keep Christ at the center of all we do. Whether sending Christmas cards or greetings, let us stay focused on the true meaning of the season. It is not merely a "happy holiday" season; it is so much more. I encourage you to say "Merry Christmas"—whether you're shopping, visiting friends, at work, or simply walking down the street.
This year, we are truly blessed as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of our St. Clare Family. There have been so many special events to mark this milestone:
-
A heartfelt thank you to Joey Albert, the One Voice Choir, and all the performers and backstage volunteers who helped organize the concert on November 30th. It was a magical night filled with music that touched and transformed the hearts of everyone who attended!
-
Looking ahead, we invite you to join us for Brunch with Santa this Sunday, December 8th, after the 11 a.m. Mass.
-
Don't miss our Christmas Potluck on Friday, December 13th. It’s another wonderful opportunity to celebrate together as a community. You can still sign up to participate!
Although I usually refrain from making recommendations, I am often asked where to purchase a Bible. There are two excellent Catholic bookstores in Greater Vancouver: St. Andrew’s Bookstore in Burnaby and Holy Family Bookstore in Langley. Both are wonderful places to find religious articles, Catholic books, and Bibles.
For those who prefer online options, I highly recommend visiting The Word on Fire website. This platform offers a wealth of Catholic resources and beautifully printed materials. Recently, they published a multi-volume edition of the Bible, and I particularly recommend the Gospels volume—a stunning edition with insightful commentaries and explanations of the Sacred Text. It’s well worth exploring online.
On another note, mark your calendar for our Parish Advent Penitential Service. There will be a number of priests to hear confessions on Thursday, December 19th at 7 pm.
May God bless you abundantly as we continue our journey through Advent together.
Fr. Maciej
P.S. Each year at Christmas time, I am deeply grateful and touched by your thoughtfulness and generosity. Abundant gifts of chocolates and sweets can be overwhelming especially for one person. That said, I kindly request no sweets please.

Food for Thought . . . and for the Soul
Feast of St Francis Xavier: December 3
Born in the town of Xavier, Kingdom of Navarre, he was a companion of Ignatius of Loyola and one of the first seven Jesuits who took vows of poverty and chastity at Montmartre, Paris in 1534. He led an extensive mission into Asia, mainly the Portuguese Empire in the East, and was influential in evangelization work, most notably in early modern India. As a representative of the king of Portugal, he was also the first major Christian missionary to venture into Borneo, the Maluku Islands, Japan, and other areas. He is considered to be one of the greatest missionaries since Paul the Apostle.
Registration forms, Mass offerings and other mail may be dropped at any time in the mail slot of the parish office door located on 1320 Johnson Street.
| |
The parish office is closed on statutory holidays.

SUNDAY OFFERING ENVELOPES
2025
Available now for pick up
in the church lobby!
| | | |
Assigning of envelopes is computerized and based on the frequency of envelopes used in 2024.
Parishioners donating through Pre Authorized Payment (PAP) or online through the Archdiocese may request for a box of second collections only (half box) envelopes.
Envelopes are one of the ways to donate, in addition to online and pre-authorized payment. Not having envelopes does not necessarily mean that you are no longer a parishioner.
If you would like a box of envelopes, please contact the parish office.

Project Advance 2024!
Thank you to everyone who has donated to this year’s Project Advance campaign. Because of your generosity we have received $148,151.32 in pledges from only 295 of our families or 31% of our registered parishioners.
While we have met our diocesan commitment of $61,300, we still have a long way to go to meet our parish goal of $200,000. All additional pledges will be used to help pay our mortgage and fund other special projects as required in the parish.
If you have not yet donated, please take a few minutes to prayerfully consider what you and your family would like to donate this year. We would love to have 100% participation from our parishioners. Remember, every gift regardless of its size make a difference. Every gift counts.
You can contribute to Project Advance by going online at projectadvance.ca. You can also complete a pledge form (available in the lobby) and put it in the collection, drop it off at the office or mail it to St. Clare of Assisi Parish, 1320 Johnson Street, Coquitlam, B.C. V3B 4T5. Cheques should be made out to Project Advance. You can also call 604-683-0281. Ext. 323. Donations must be received on or before December 31, 2024, in order to receive 2024 tax receipt.
A special note for anyone who has donated online and has any questions. Please email donations@rcav.org and they will help you. For example, they can tell you when your past pledge expires, how much you have pledged, and they can change your credit card or banking information.
Our way forward begins with your generosity in growing our parish and local Catholic community. We’re grateful for your support. Thank you!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
2nd Sunday of Advent
December 8
“And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value…”
Philippians 1:9-10
| | | |
During the Christmas shopping season, it is easy to get caught up in the frenzy of buying gifts. But is that “gift” truly an expression of your love for the other person. Or, are you just fulfilling your “obligation” to give them something? To grow in friendship with someone, you need to spend time with them and learn what is of value to them. Maybe this year, buy less “stuff” and spend more time with those you love.

THE ADVENT TREE IS UP!
1. Take one of the Colour Tags or Gift Certificate Envelopes off the tree.
2. Purchase the GIFT or GIFT CERTIFICATE.
3. Place the GIFT in a gift bag & attach the original tag from the tree to the gift.
Place the GIFT CERTIFICATE (or cash/cheque) in the envelope provided
and drop it in the box under the Tree.
BRING THE GIFT OR GIFT CERTIFICATE TO THE TREE IN CHURCH
BY THE DATE INDICATED ON THE TAG.
This is very important as it will be delivered to the recipient at an event organized by the group to which they belong near the date specified.
OTHER IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER:
1. YOU MUST ATTACH THE TAG TO THE GIFT in a gift bag when you return it to the tree. The information on this tag is our tool to ensure that your gift is delivered to the correct destination.
2. It is imperative that the VALUE of any Gift Card be indicated on the card itself & placed in the envelope from the tree.
3. If your donation is cash or cheque, the amount will be included in your parish tax receipt.
4. You are welcome to bring a Christmas tree ornament with each gift you donate. Just before Christmas, we will replace the bare Advent Tree of Need with a beautifully decorated Christmas Tree of Love.
Thank you very much for participating in our Advent Tree. By doing so, you are an answer to the prayers of the poor and needy in our area.
If you have any questions or if you would like to sponsor a family in need, please email Sharon at bzmamma@hotmail.com.

DO YOU EVER ASK YOURSELF...
What am I looking for in life?
What is the meaning of my life?
How can I be a better person?
What can I do about the loneliness I feel?
How can I come to know God's love?
How can I know the right path God has in store for me?

We will try to book your mass intention as close to the request as possible. Please note that there may be unforeseen situations when your scheduled date may be changed without notice.

The goal of “Fiat” Women’s Online Discernment Group is to provide a prayerful environment for young women to discern their vocation, primarily the possible call to Religious Life. These women are given an opportunity to listen to and discuss certain topics about discernment and Religious life in general. Hopefully this Discernment Group will be a good preparation for women who are called to Religious Life to enter the community they are called to with peace and an adequate knowledge of what the Church is asking and desiring for Religious Life.
