Greetings!
Saturday, May 23 marked Archbishop Richard Smith’s first anniversary of installation as Archbishop of Vancouver. The following day, Sunday, May 24, the Solemnity of Pentecost, Archbishop Smith published a Pastoral Letter announcing a process of Renewal in the Archdiocese of Vancouver.
In the letter, Archbishop Smith reflects on what he has heard and witnessed during his first year, and invites the faithful to enter into this renewal through prayer, discernment, and openness to the work of the Holy Spirit. He also asks Catholics to visit rcav.org/renew to commit to praying for the process and to sign up for future updates.

A Letter to the Christian Faithful on Renewal
in the Archdiocese of Vancouver
Dear Brother and Sisters in Christ,
From the beginning of my appointment, I have sensed that I was entering a current of grace already moving through the Archdiocese of Vancouver. It has been a joy to witness the vitality of this local Church and to learn of its long tradition of faithful witness to Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit has clearly been at work among us and continues to lead us forward in the joyful proclamation of the Gospel.
Over the past year, I have visited communities throughout the Archdiocese and listened to many voices. Meetings with our priests have deepened my understanding of our history and the challenges before us. Through these encounters, I have become even more convinced that God is powerfully at work among us, calling us to respond with faith, courage, and hope.
In many of these conversations, a shared desire for renewal has emerged. By renewal, we mean responding to what God is doing among us. It is not about reinventing the Church or focusing mainly on structures, strategies, or programs. The Church is more than buildings; she is mission. Everything we do must lead people to a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. The proclamation of the Gospel is the heart of renewal and must remain at the centre of all we do together.
Therefore, on this Solemnity of Pentecost, I am announcing a process of renewal for the Archdiocese of Vancouver. As we prepare for the great Jubilee of 2033, marking two thousand years since the Redemption, let us ask with renewed faith: what does the Lord desire for his Church in Vancouver, and to what is he calling us?
To guide this process, I have established several task forces to consider how renewal should unfold in different areas of Archdiocesan life and to make recommendations to me. These are: priestly life, parish life, liturgy, schools, and infrastructure. In the months ahead, many ideas, hopes, concerns, and proposals will emerge as participants reflect and pray with generosity and courage, always remembering that we are not directing this process. We are stepping into something God is already doing. This is an exciting moment in the life of our local Church.
The biblical text guiding this process is the Lord’s promise in the Book of Revelation: “Behold, I make all things new” (Revelation 21:5). These words assure us that Christ is renewing his Church. Our task is to listen, discern, and follow. I invite everyone to take part in this endeavour, especially through prayer. Please pray for our parishes, priests, schools, and ministries. In particular, pray that care for God’s poor ones remains at the heart of our Archdiocesan renewal. In the months ahead, there will also be opportunities to share your experiences and stay connected as this process unfolds.

Together, let us entrust this journey to the intercession of the Blessed Mother, our model of openness to the gentle yet powerful work of the Holy Spirit. May she who said, “Do whatever he tells you” guide us by her example and prayer to follow with joy and hope where the Lord leads.

PROJECT ADVANCE 2026 IF NOW UNDERWAY AT OUR PARISH!!
This year’s campaign is especially exciting as the money we raise after making our diocesan goal of $63,300 will be used to help “build our new rectory” as well as pay down our existing mortgage. Because of the new rectory project we have increased our target to $250,000 over last year where we raised $220,000. To date we have raised $28,944.
This will be the last weekend for volunteers in the lobby (June 6-7) to help with your pledges and answer questions. Of course, you can also go online at projectadvance.ca . Or you can drop your pledge into one of the collection boxes or at office; or make a pledge by calling 604-683-0281 ext, 323.
If you are new to the parish or have not received your pledge form and letter in the mail there are extra pledge forms with the volunteers in the lobby or in the display case by the bulletin board.

Our True Vocation
Too often I looked at being relevant, popular, and powerful as ingredients of an effective ministry. The truth, however, is that these are not vocations but temptations. Jesus asks, “Do you love me?” Jesus sends us out to be shepherds, and Jesus promises a life in which we increasingly have to stretch out our hands and be led to places where we would rather not go. He asks us to move from a concern for relevance to a life of prayer, from worries about popularity to communal and mutual ministry, and from a leadership built on power to a leadership in which we critically discern where God is leading us.

St Philip Neri’s encounter with the Holy Spirit shows how the Spirit seeks to purify our hearts and profoundly transform our lives.
Philip Neri had the custom of rising late at night or in the first hours of morning, making his way through the sleeping city of Rome, outside the city walls, to the Basilica of Saint Sebastian. There he would descend beneath the church, to the ancient catacombs, where the first Christians of Rome met for Mass, where so many martyrs slept. In that sacred place he would spend time in prayer.
On one such occasion, the Apostle of Rome went to those catacombs on the vigil of Pentecost. As he prayed, the Holy Spirit appeared to him as a globe of fire that entered his mouth and settled in his heart. He felt his heart expand. From that moment on, as people would later testify, there came from his heart a mysterious but perceptible warmth, indeed a heat. After his death an autopsy revealed that two ribs had broken to form an arch, to accommodate the enlarged heart.
It’s fitting that the feast of Saint Philip Neri (Tuesday May 26 2026) often falls so close to Pentecost. For his experience in the catacombs is a great lesson on how we should receive the Spirit this day. As is the case with every miracle, his encounter with the Holy Spirit reveals in an extraordinary manner what should be ordinary for every Catholic. And, lest we think Saint Philip’s experience was odd, we should recall that we pray often for the same thing: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.

Pope Leo XIV's encyclical
"Magnifica Humanitas"
Pope Leo XIV on Monday 25 May 2026 presented his first papal encyclical letter, “Magnifica Humanitas”, which he had previously signed 10 days earlier on the 135th anniversary of the publication “Rerum Novarum” in English by his namesake, Leo XIII, which was written in 1891. Amid the upheaval of the Industrial Revolution in that earlier document, Leo XIII sought to safeguard the rights and dignity of the working class; it became one of the foundational texts of Catholic social teaching”,

We will try to book your mass intention as close to the request as possible. Please note that there may be unforeseen situations when your scheduled date may be changed without notice.
The suggested offering for a mass intention is $10 and can be brought to the office, mailed to 1320 Johnson Street, Coquitlam, V3B 4T5 or dropped in the collection box in the church. Enclose your offering in an envelope clearly marked with the name and date of your Mass intention. Your offering will go to the priest who says the mass, not to the church.
If you are unable to use email, mass intentions may be phoned in at 604-941-4800.
