As we enter the season of Lent, we are called to simplify our lives and let go of unnecessary burdens. Spring is a time of renewal, offering us the opportunity to break free from unhealthy habits. Don’t put it off—take the first step today.

One of the cherished traditions of Lent is the devotion of walking in Christ’s footsteps through the Via Dolorosa—the Stations of the Cross. We invite you to join us every Friday after the morning Mass for this solemn and prayerful journey.

We are also pleased to share that Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton as the new Archbishop of Vancouver. We welcome this news with great joy and look forward to his leadership and guidance.

At the same time, we express our deep gratitude to Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, who has faithfully served our Archdiocese since his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. Over the years, he has shepherded nearly 400,000 Catholics across 77 parishes, leaving a lasting impact on our community. His presence has been felt in every corner of the Archdiocese, from our 52 schools to four institutes of higher education. As he prepares for retirement in Houston, we give thanks for his dedication and pray for him in this next chapter of his journey.

Food for Thought . . . and for the Soul

Lent (Latin: Quadragesima, 'Fortieth') is the solemn Christian religious observance in the liturgical year in preparation for Easter. It echoes the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptation by Satan, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, before beginning his public ministry. Lent is described as lasting for a total duration of 40 days, the number of days Jesus, as well as Moses and Elijah, went without food in their respective fasts.  Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends approximately six weeks later. Lent concludes either on the evening of Maundy Thursday, or at sundown on Holy Saturday, when the Easter Vigil is celebrated, though in either case, Lenten fasting observances are maintained until the evening of Holy Saturday.

The Chair of Saint Peter (Latin: Cathedra Petri)is a relic conserved in St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the sovereign enclave of the Pope inside Rome, Italy. The relic is a wooden throne that tradition claims belonged to the Apostle Saint Peter

Reflection

Reflect, today, upon your own view of the Church today. If scandals and divisions have weakened your faith, then turn your eyes to our Lord and to His holy and divine promise. The gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against the Church. That is a fact promised by our Lord Himself. Believe it and rejoice in that glorious truth.

My glorious Bridegroom, You have instituted the Church upon the rock foundation of Peter’s faith. Peter and all of his successors are Your precious gift to us all. Help me to see beyond the sins of others, the scandals and divisions, and to see You, my Lord, leading all people to salvation through Your bride the Church. I renew my faith, this day, in the gift of this One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Jesus, I trust in You.

Registration forms, Mass offerings and other mail may be dropped at any time in the mail slot of the parish office door located on 1320 Johnson Street. 

The parish office is closed on statutory holidays.

Assigning of envelopes is computerized and based on the frequency of envelopes used in 2024.

Parishioners donating through Pre Authorized Payment (PAP) or online through the Archdiocese may request for a box of second collections only (half box) envelopes.

Envelopes are one of the ways to donate, in addition to online and pre-authorized payment. Not having envelopes does not necessarily mean that you are no longer a parishioner.

The Jubilee is an experience of faith and a profound encounter with the Lord. The official Prayer allows pilgrims from all over the world to use the same words to express gratitude to God for the Jubilee experience and request the grace of forgiveness. (from jubilaem2025.va)

This line from the Old Testament offers two challenges. First, do you give to God from your “first fruits” - the first and best that you have to offer? Or do you give from what you have leftover? Second, do you realize that everything you have and that everything you are has been given to you by God? We aren’t owners of anything, we are merely Stewards of God’s gifts. Pray for a grateful and generous heart, every day, in all circumstances.

CWL St. Clare of Assisi Bursary

A Bursary of $750.00 is available to a St. Clare of Assisi parishioner who is accepted into a post-secondary institution to start or continue his/her education.

Criteria:

·       The applicant must be a practicing Roman Catholic at St. Clare of Assisi Parish and must not be more than 22 years of age by December 31^st, 2025.

·       A Bursary is a monetary gift that is given to a student based on some financial need.

·       Bursary funds will be released only upon proof of payment of tuition fees in September in the year following receipt of bursary in the Spring. Bursary will be paid directly to the student only.

·       An application must be accompanied by a letter of no more than 1 page prepared by the applicant’s own words.

Applications must be received by March 31^st, 2025.

The Bursary Committee decision will be final. The Bursary will be presented at the CWL June Social in St. Clare of Assisi Parish.

• You join a local group called the Praesidium.
• You are taken on probation for at least three months.
• During the time you sample the Legion system and take part in Legion works. At the end of the probation period, you can decide whether or not you wish to take on full membership.

ADORATION CHAPEL

The Adoration Chapel is accessible daily. Entrance to the Adoration Chapel is open between 8am and 6pm.  

Pre-Authorized Payments

We offer a Pre-Authorized Payment (PAP) plan which you can sign up for by completing the form and returning it with a void cheque to the parish office. Pre-authorized payments are withdrawn directly from your bank account on the 1st day of the month. Click the button below to download the form.

Please remember to sign the back as it is invalid without a signature. You may seal the completed form in an envelope marked Pre-Authorized Payment and drop it in the donation box located in the church, mail it or bring it to the parish office. The form must be in the office by the 20th of the month in order for it to be effective on the following 1st of the month.

Donations at Church

Donations may be dropped in the collection basket circulated at Sunday Mass or in the box located in the church lobby. If you would like a set of Sunday Offering envelopes, please contact the parish office. Otherwise, Visitors' Envelopes are available on the brochure rack in the church lobby.

Second Collections - When there is a Second Collection, a designated collection box will be available at the back of the church.

There will be a second collection on the weekend of March 9 for St. Joseph's Society for Infirm and Retired Priests. This collection supports our retired priests who have dedicated their entire life to the Church. Generous support from the community ensures a comfortable living environment, quality medical care, and other essential services for our retired priests. Donations may also be made online at rcav.org/joseph.

If you wish to book a Mass Intention, please send your request via email at stclareofassisi@shaw.ca giving the name of the person, whether it is for a living or deceased person, who it is from and if you have any preferences for the day of the week, a weekend mass or specific date. We will try to book your mass intention as close to the request as possible.  Please note that there may be unforeseen situations when your scheduled date may be changed without notice.

The suggested offering for a mass intention is $10 and can be brought to the office, mailed to 1320 Johnson Street, Coquitlam, V3B 4T5 or dropped in the collection box in the church. Enclose your offering in an envelope clearly marked with the name and date of your Mass intention. Your offering will go to the priest who says the mass, not to the church.

If you are unable to use email, mass intentions may be phoned in at 604-941-4800.

We are able to accept multiple Mass intentions on Fridays. For all other days, we can book one intention only.

The goal of “Fiat” Women’s Online Discernment Group is to provide a prayerful environment for young women to discern their vocation, primarily the possible call to Religious Life. These women are given an opportunity to listen to and discuss certain topics about discernment and Religious life in general. Hopefully this Discernment Group will be a good preparation for women who are called to Religious Life to enter the community they are called to with peace and an adequate knowledge of what the Church is asking and desiring for Religious Life.
