Greetings!
Traditionally in November, as the liturgical year draws to a close and the natural world reminds us of life’s passing seasons, the Church turns her attention to the “Church Suffering,” also known as the “Penitent” or “Expectant” Church — the souls in purgatory.
Although November 2 (All Souls’ Day) has passed, our prayers for the departed continue throughout the entire month. This beautiful practice should be encouraged, for the souls in purgatory cannot pray for themselves.
Those who die in God’s grace but still require purification spend time in purgatory, where they are prepared to enter the fullness of God’s presence in heaven. We do not know what “time” means in purgatory, but we do know that prayer is never wasted. Our prayers assist the souls of the faithful departed on their journey toward heaven — and in turn, they intercede for us.
St. Padre Pio urged the faithful to pray frequently for the dead, saying, “Let’s empty purgatory!” Let us take this invitation to heart.
During the month of November, we continue our long-standing tradition of offering All Souls’ Masses. All Souls envelopes are available at the back of the church — please write the names of your deceased family members, friends, and forgotten souls, include your offering, and place the envelope in the church donation box. We will collect these envelopes throughout the month of November.
Let us join together in prayer and love, helping to “empty purgatory.”

Let’s give Cardinal Newman himself a final word by having recourse to two of his more beautiful prayers:
May He support us all the day long, till the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in His mercy, may He give us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last.
And this:
Oh, my Lord and Saviour, support me in that hour in the strong arms of Thy Sacraments, and by the fresh fragrance of Thy consolations. Let the absolving words be said over me, and the holy oil sign and seal me, and Thy own Body be my food, and Thy Blood my sprinkling; and let my sweet Mother, Mary, breathe on me, and my Angel whisper peace to me, and my glorious Saints. . .smile upon me; that in them all, and through them all, I may receive the gift of perseverance, and die, as I desire to live, in Thy faith, in Thy Church, in Thy service, and in Thy love. How to Pray for the Souls of the Dead
There is no right or wrong way to pray for the souls of our loved ones as long as you pray with sincerity and from the heart. We can offer any specific prayer for our loved ones, including the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, novenas, and especially the Holy Mass
.
Pope Francis reminds us of the power of having a Mass offered for a deceased loved one:
“Church tradition has always urged prayer for the dead, in particular by offering the celebration of the Eucharist for them: it is the best spiritual help that we can give to their souls, particularly to the most abandoned ones,”
Pope Francis said.
"You don’t need to formally arrange a Mass offering to pray for someone who has died."
Simple prayers and intentions, in conversation with God, are all it takes.
Some good intentions might be for deceased loved ones to be forgiven of their sins, to be healed of any spiritual wounds, and to be given the grace to enter Heaven.
Some simple prayers you can say are:
Eternal Rest Prayer
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.
Prayer for Our Faithful Departed
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Like the seed buried in the ground, you have produced the harvest of eternal life for us; make us always dead to sin and alive to God. Amen.
St. Gertrude’s Prayer
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners every where, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

If you wish to book a Mass Intention, please send your request via email at stclareofassisi@shaw.ca giving the name of the person, whether it is for a living or deceased person, who it is from and if you have any preferences for the day of the week, a weekend mass or specific date. We will try to book your mass intention as close to the request as possible. Please note that there may be unforeseen situations when your scheduled date may be changed without notice.
The suggested offering for a mass intention is $10 and can be brought to the office, mailed to 1320 Johnson Street, Coquitlam, V3B 4T5 or dropped in the collection box in the church. Enclose your offering in an envelope clearly marked with the name and date of your Mass intention. Your offering will go to the priest who says the mass, not to the church.
If you are unable to use email, mass intentions may be phoned in at 604-941-4800.
