St. Clare Updates for

September 14 - 27 , 2024

Hello St Clare,

We are already fully engaged in our programs and activities. It is nice to see that our parking lot is busy with many of you arriving for prayer, formation and fellowship in the evenings. It is not too late to sign up for those you might know who are interested in becoming Catholic (RCIA) or children attending public schools and in need of religious education program (PREP).

Looking later on this school year (potentially in February), I am hoping to start a new Alpha for Men. Would you be interested to help organizing it? Please let me know. We will need leaders at the tables, but we also need a team of helpers for hospitality and serving meals.

Finally, let us not forget our 25th Anniversary celebratory Mass on Saturday, October 5th at 5pm. Everyone is welcome!

Fr. Maciej

Food for Thought . . . and for the Soul

Feast of St Matthew, Apostle & Evangelist

St Matthew emerged from the despised profession of tax collectors, seen as traitors to the Jews for collaborating with the Romans and often profiting by imposing extra taxes on their own people. Saint Matthew was most likely born as Levi, the son of Alphaeus. The name “Levi” implies that he was from the Tribe of Levi that was responsible for Jewish liturgical worship. Possibly, Jesus gave Levi the name Matthew, meaning “Gift of Yahweh,” upon his conversion.

Levi’s call to follow Jesus changed his life in an instant. Likely working in Capernaum, where Jesus had been living in Peter’s home, Levi might have been corrupt, greedy, and ostracized by his Jewish community. His duties would have included collecting taxes on goods coming to Capernaum via the Sea of Galilee, as well as charging a toll to those who arrived there by boat. Matthew’s Gospel relates his conversion this way, “As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him”.

Immediately after Matthew abandoned his occupation, he invited Jesus to dine at his house and Jesus accepted. Dining with them were other tax collectors and sinners. The Pharisees quickly condemned Jesus for associating with these men. Jesus rebukes them: “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners”.

A National Saint for Our Time

September 26 is the feast day of St Jean de Brébeuf SJ, a French Jesuit missionary born in Normandy, who travelled to New France (Canada) in 1625. In 1649, Brébeuf and another missionary were captured when an Iroquois raid took over a Huron village. Brébeuf had chosen Ihonatiria (Saint-Joseph) as the centre for missionary activity with the Huron. At that time, the Huron suffered epidemics of new Eurasian diseases contracted from the Europeans. Their death rates were high, as they had no immunity to the diseases long endemic in Europe. They, with our hindsight, rightly blamed the Europeans for the deaths, with none of the parties understanding the causes. Together with Huron captives, the missionaries were ritually tortured and killed on 16 March 1649. Afterwards, his heart was eaten by Iroquois tribesmen.

Potential martyrdom was a central component of the Jesuit missionary identity. Missionaries going to Canada knew they were at risk from harsh conditions, as well as from confronting alien cultures. They expected to die in the name of God; they believed the missionary life and its risks were a chance to save converts and be saved.

Project Advance 2024!

Thank you to everyone who has donated to this year’s Project Advance campaign. Because of your generosity we have received $98,296.32 in pledges from only 204 of our families or 22% of our registered parishioners. While we have met our diocesan commitment of $61,300, we still have a long way to go to meet our parish goal of $200,000. All additional pledges will be used to help pay our mortgage and fund other special projects as required in the parish.

If you have not yet donated, please take a few minutes to prayerfully consider what you and your family would like to donate this year. We would love to have 100% participation from our parishioners. Remember, every gift regardless of its size make a difference. Every gift counts.

You can contribute to Project Advance by going online at projectadvance.ca. You can also complete a pledge form (available in the lobby) and put it in the collection, drop it off at the office or mail it to St. Clare of Assisi Parish, 1320 Johnson Street, Coquitlam, B.C. V3B 4T5. Cheques should be made out to Project Advance. You can also call 604-683-0281. Ext. 323.

A special note for anyone who has donated online and has any questions. Please email donations@rcav.org and they will help you. For example, they can tell you when your past pledge expires, how much you have pledged and they can change your credit card or banking information.

Our way forward begins with your generosity in growing our parish and local Catholic community. We’re grateful for your support. Thank you!

EMAIL SCAM ALERT!

A recent email scam is again circulating pretending to come from Fr. Maciej.

Fr. Maciej will never send a request for financial aid via email. Please do not respond to such email.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 15

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

Mark 8:34

Living a stewardship lifestyle means not only being responsible for my own life, but for the lives of others as well. We realize that our gifts are not intended for ourselves, rather they are meant to be shared with others. “Taking up my cross” means doing things when someone else needs me and not when it’s convenient for me.

How can I be a better person?

What can I do about the loneliness I feel?

How can I come to know God's love?

How can I know the right path God has in store for me?

In and Around the Diocese

The goal of “Fiat” Women’s Online Discernment Group is to provide a prayerful environment for young women to discern their vocation, primarily the possible call to Religious Life. These women are given an opportunity to listen to and discuss certain topics about discernment and Religious life in general. Hopefully this Discernment Group will be a good preparation for women who are called to Religious Life to enter the community they are called to with peace and an adequate knowledge of what the Church is asking and desiring for Religious Life.
