San Diego Master Chorale: LUX

Sunday, April 12, 4:00 pm

Light. Peace. Transcendence.

This Sunday, San Diego Master Chorale returns with LUX, a program that brings nearly 100 voices together with organ, percussion, and harp, in one of La Jolla’s most vibrant cultural gatherings of the season.

At the center: Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna.

This is one of the Chorale’s largest and most immersive programs of the season, and it’s the kind of performance that’s best experienced live, in the resonant acoustic of St. James by-the-Sea.

Tickets $25–$45. Limited availability.

Compline-by-Candlelight

Sunday, April 26, 7:00 pm

Compline-by-Candlelight is a contemplative offering of ancient beauty at the close of day. This brief, 30-minute liturgy invites stillness through plainsong, silence, and prayer. Sung entirely by the Schola Cantorum of St. James, the service follows the traditional form of Compline—the final office of the monastic hours—offering sacred space for rest, reflection, and quiet encounter with the divine.

Holy Week Sermons

Sunday Sermon

Sunday, April 5, Easter Sunday

Who we are

Mary at the tomb thought Jesus was the gardener. The Rev. Dr. Mark Hargreaves explains how we recognize others can define who we are as well: “May we be given the grace to identify Jesus for who he truly is, so that we can come to know who we truly are.”

Maundy Thursday: Hope for a broken world

The Rev. Dr. Mark Hargreaves uses the centuries old Japanese art of kintsugi to examine what the “broken” body of Jesus can tell us today: “Let us see that brokenness is not the final word, and that living into our failings allows for brokenness to be restored, to come back more beautiful.”

Good Friday: The Cross

The Rev. Abby VanderBrug examines the cross as a symbol of both sorrow and love. “It is the sign of God's very heart, the victory that refuses violence, the sacrifice that restores the world.”
