Many thanks to Irene Vilar for hosting coffee hour this week.

There's a coffee hour sign-up sheet in the parish hall near the back door.  Please choose a Sunday to make coffee and bring treats for our fellowship time after the 9:30 a.m. service.

JANUARY EAGLE

The January issue of our monthly newsletter, The Eagle, should be available on our website sometime this weekend.  Click here to go to the publications page, then select January Eagle.

Organ Concert Tonight!

Brian du Fresne
St. John's principal organist Brian du Fresne will present an evening of music on Friday, January 10th, at 7:30 in the sanctuary at St. John's.  Don't miss it!

Got Kids?

Our regular Sunday morning children's programs (Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Joyful Journey, Cross+Trails, and Elements) are on hiatus until January 26th. This Sunday, January 12th, all children will be in church for "Second Sunday."

On Sunday, January 19th, there is no children's programming because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. school holiday.

Jesus: First-Century Rabbi

Rabbi David Zaslow, interim rabbi at Congregation Nevei Kodesh in Boulder, will give a free talk at St. John's on Sunday, January 19th, at 7:30 p.m. about his new book, Jesus: First-Century Rabbi.  The book takes a bold, fresh look at the historical Jesus and the Jewish roots of Christianity, and challenges both Jews and Christians to re-examine their understanding of Jesus's commitment to his Jewish faith.

Annual Meeting

Save the date - Sunday, January 26th - for our annual meeting in the parish hall following the 9:30 a.m. service.  We'll share a potluck lunch (last names A-K please bring main dish, L-R dessert, S-Z salad or side dish), hear about the "state of St. John's," and elect new vestry members.

Bios of vestry candidates Mark Burnett, Eric Klassen, and Charlie Lujan will be included in the January issue of The Eagle.

We'll need some help in the kitchen during the annual meeting; please call the office to volunteer!

January Loose Plate

Half of our loose plate (all cash in the plate and all checks made out to St. John's with "Loose Plate" in the memo line) goes to support charitable organizations; 100% of all checks with the name of the recipient organization in the memo line goes to the organization.  This month's contributions will go to Boulder County Cares (BCC), the street outreach program of the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless.  BCC uses trained volunteers to canvass the community every evening (October 1st-April 30th), distributing blankets, gloves, hats, and other warm clothing, and providing food to people living on the streets.  BCC clients may also receive, when appropriate, transportation to the shelter or other local care providers.

Altar Flowers

You may have noticed that our altar flowers are given each week by someone in the congregation (or someone with ties to St. John's).  The cost of flowers is $40, and checks can be made out to "St. John's Altar Guild."  This year we have some Sundays where we do not yet have a donor:  March 23rd and 30th, June 22nd and 29th, and August 31st.  If you'd like to give flowers on one of those days (or on another day - we can have multiple donors!) in remembrance of someone or in thanksgiving, please contact Pam White in the office, 303-442-5246, ext. 101, or pamelabwhite@comcast.net, and let her know what you'd like your dedication to say.

Let's Be Good Stewards!

"Stewardship" has many meanings at St. John's.  Usually when we talk about stewardship, we mean pledging our time, talent, or treasure to support our church.  We also need to remember, however, that stewardship also means taking care of our facilities.  Recently we've had incidents of lights being left on, doors being left unlocked, and even tap water left running all night!

Please remember that when you are here for a meeting -- especially if you're the last one to leave the building -- you are responsible for:

  • Turning off all lights
  • Locking all doors
  • Checking the part of the building you're in to make sure that no one is inside, and that the lavatories are secure (no lights on, no running water or toilets)
  • Making sure the elevator is turned off
  • Making sure all of the kitchen equipment is turned off and that portable coffee pots are unplugged.
  • Making sure all dishes and glasses you've used are WASHED and put away (we don't have dish fairies who come in in the morning to do your dishes!)
  • Making sure that counter-tops and tables are clean, and that tables and chairs are put back the way you found them
And when you are here for a meeting at night, use the buddy system -- make sure no one is in the building alone.  Ask someone to wait and check the facilities with you.  We want to be good stewards of YOU, too!

BOOK GROUP

The Blue Sapphire of the Mind:

Notes for a Contemplative Ecology

St. John's and the Contemplative Beehive are sponsoring a book group this fall to discuss The Blue Sapphire of the Mind:  Notes for a Contemplative Ecology by Douglas E. Christie.  In The Blue Sapphire of the Mind, Douglas E. Christie proposes a distinctively contemplative approach to ecological thought and practice that can help restore our sense of the earth as a sacred place.  Our next meeting is Monday, January 27th, at 4 p.m. in the St. John's youth room. Meetings include 20 minutes of centering prayer followed by ample time for discussion.  We plan to discuss the book one chapter at a time over the course of nine months. Come to the next meeting prepared to discuss Chapter 5.  Books are available at The Boulder Book Store and Amazon.com.  Please contact Diane Wells at 303-442-5246, ext. 105, or dwells@stjohnsboulder.org for more information.

Polar Bear Build for Habitat

Are you bored this winter?  Want an outdoor activity with fellowship and fun? The Flatirons Habitat for Humanity is having a Polar Bear Build.  Please join others from St. John's for some hands-on outreach on March 22, 2014, to assist with a build for a family in need.  No experience is necessary, only a willing heart.  (Of course, skilled workers are also welcome!)  Interested youth ages 16-17 may contact Joe Domko, 720-936-4798 or ecopax22@gmail.com, for information.  Adults, please contact Kathy Ashworth, 303-589-4785 or kathleen687@comcast.net.  To sign up to work on the March 22nd Habitat build, go to the Flatirons Habitat website,
www.flatironshabitat.org , and click through to the volunteer section (located on the "Get Involved" tab). Select "Volunteer Now" and log in if you are already a registered volunteer or register if you are a new volunteer. When registering, it is helpful if you can check the box for St. John's as part of your profile. Then you will come to a calendar where you can sign up for March 22nd and enter "St. John's" in the group name box.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Readings

Isaiah 42:1-9

"Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching." Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: "I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them."

Psalm 29

1 Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, *

ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his Name; *

worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; *

the Lord is upon the mighty waters.

4 The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; *

the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; *

the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon;

6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, *

and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire;

the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; *

the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

8 The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe *

and strips the forests bare.

9 And in the temple of the Lord *

all are crying, "Glory!"

10 The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; *

the Lord sits enthroned as King for evermore.

11 The Lord shall give strength to his people; *

the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace.

Acts: 10:34-43

Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ-he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him toappear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

Matthew 3:13-17

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."
