This week the group that traveled to South Africa with Canon James and Deacon Lorine last fall will host a special African coffee hour to honor Bishop Steven Diseko of the Diocese of Matlosane.

WE DESPERATELY NEED HELP WITH COFFEE HOUR THIS SUMMER!!!

There's a coffee hour sign-up sheet in the parish hall near the back door.  Please choose a Sunday to make coffee and bring treats for our fellowship time after the 9:30 a.m. service.

REMEMBER:

Now that we have a coffee hour mentor, hosting is easier than ever!

Parish Picnic: A "Thundering" Good Time!

About 125 of us gathered in North Boulder Park last Sunday to share fellowship, fun, and food.  We were able to baptize eight new Christians, listen to Pastor Susan's children's sermon about the gifts each of us receives from the Holy Spirit, and share the Eucharist before the thunder and lightening got TOO close and the skies opened up.

Despite not being able to play games because of the rain, everyone had a blast.  As always, the sandwiches from Half Fast Subs on the hill food were outstanding, and our parishioners brought a fabulous array of salads, sides, and desserts.

Speaking of desserts, Kaitlin White took top honors in the pie-baking contest with her latticed-top cherry pie.  Jocelyn Gebhardt was second with her chocolate pecan, and Eben Carsey's strawberry rhubarb took third.

Many thanks to all who made the picnic a success -- especially DIANE WELLS, who organized all the volunteers and made everything come together splendidly, and her co-coordinator, Roxanne Bamond.  Hats off also to Shem and Karla Trapp, Mike and Kelli Soika, and Jamie Rutherford for planning the games that were, sadly, never executed (but then, no one was electrocuted either!); our set-up crew -- Dora Chezick, Candice Smith, Roxanne Bamond, Ebrahim Asadishad, and Joe Domko; greeters Fran and Ken Dutro; decorators Anne Skamarock, Regina Carlyon, Betsy Shears, and Jean Roche; sub-picker-upper, Allen White; potluck food organizer, Ginny Pine; pie-judges Roxanne Bamond, Gary Pine, and Father Ben Newland; and our clean-up artists -- Eben Carsey & Lynn Gilbert, Nina Molinaro, Deacon Jan Dewlen, and Peter Gilman & Peggy LeMone.  Finally, thanks to everyone who brought food to share and a hand to help!

Street Closures

Sunday, June 29th

Please allow extra time to get to church on Sunday, June 29th. The Boulder Heart & Sole Half Marathon's start/finish line is located at 14th and Pearl Streets, and parts of Broadway, 28th, Iris, Pearl, 14th, 15th, and 20th Streets will be closed. In addition, parking will likely be difficult.  The race begins at 7:15 a.m. and will thus affect worshippers at both the services that day. Please see the event web site, heartandsolehalf.com, for more information.

Welcome Bishop Diseko!

This Sunday, June 15th, we will welcome Bishop Steven Diseko of the Diocese of Matlosane in South Africa.  Bishop Diseko will share the pulpit with Pastor Susan and will attend our special coffee hour hosted by the group that traveled to South Africa last fall.  Please don't miss this special event!

Office Changes

On Monday, June 16th, Pam White will move from the front office and her job as communications coordinator to Kristina's old office and a position as interim director of children's ministries.  Pam was director of children's ministries for seven years, 1997-2003, and will reprise her role while a search committee finds someone to fill the position permanently.  Pam is certified catechist for both level 1 and level 2 of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, and has extensive experience with other children's faith formation curricula as well.  She is a firm believer in a two-track Sunday school and plans to continue with both Catechsis of the Good Shepherd and Joyful Journey.  If you have thoughts, ideas, or concerns about children's ministries, please feel free to contact Pam at 303-442-5246, ext. 107, or children@stjohnsboulder.org.  She'd love to hear from you!

At the same time, Sarah Kiefhaber, who has been volunteering in the office on Tuesday afternoons, will come on board to serve as interim communications coordinator.  She'll be producing bulletins, E-ministries, and Eagles (among other things!), so send all your St. John's news to Sarah at skiefhaber@stjohnsboulder.org.   You can also reach Sarah on the office phone, 303-442-5246, ext. 101.

Summer Sunday School!

This year, St. John's is offering a summer program for children age 3 through 5th grade during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning worship service (except on "Second Sundays)! We're using a Vacation Bible School curriculum (Under the Sun) that focuses on service to others. The program is being led and powered by parent volunteers.  We'll have songs, stories, service projects, snacks, and LOTS of fun. There is no need to register -- although there will be a detailed sign-in sheet to complete when dropping off your child(ren). For more information or to volunteer to help, please contact Karla Trapp at karla.trapp@gmail.com or Kelli Soika at ksoika@gmail.com.

Readings

Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.'"

Psalm 104:25-35, 37

25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! *

in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, *

creatures both small and great.

27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, *

which you have made for the sport of it.

28 All of them look to you *

to give them their food in due season.

29 You give it to them; they gather it; *

you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; *

you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.

31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; *

and so you renew the face of the earth.

32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; *

may the Lord rejoice in all his works.

33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; *

he touches the mountains and they smoke.

34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; *

I will praise my God while I have my being.

35 May these words of mine please him; *

I will rejoice in the Lord.

37 Bless the Lord, O my soul. *

Hallelujah!

1 Corinthians 12:4-13

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-Jews or Greeks, slaves or free-and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

John 20:19-23

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
