This Sunday @ 10:00 am

In this week's gospel lesson, Matthew 25:1-13 Jesus tells a parable about some wise bridesmaids that brought extra oil to a wedding feast, and some foolish bridesmaids who didn't and missed the wedding because they had to go out and buy more.

Speaking Peace

Thursday, November 19 @ 6:00 pm

Musician and Educator Charlie Dentel will present "The Music of Peace" in which he will discuss what we do about peace, and what we expect and think it actually is, in the context of musical expressions of various peace movements in history and the current day. How do we spread compassion, mercy, forgiveness, justice, and grace in our societies to achieve peace? What does it look like? How do we reconcile the different interpretations of that across cultural and religious divides? He will provide musical examples throughout the talk to illuminate the discussion.

Learn more about Charlie here.

A light dinner will be provided. Childcare is available on request.

Please register here so we know how many to expect.

Where do you volunteer?

Pastor Mark and the Board would like to assess the impact of St. John on our local community, beyond what we do as a congregation. Do you volunteer for Neighborhood House? CARES? Your local school? Other organizations?

If you do, please send an email to Carole Pavolich and tell her what the organization is and what you do!

John Christian Frederick Heyer, died 1873;

Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg, died 1719;

Ludwig Nommensen, died 1918; missionaries

Heyer was the first missionary sent out by American Lutherans. After teaching at Gettysburg College and Seminary he was assigned to the Andhra region of India. A worker among the Tamil people on the southeast coast of India, Ziegenbalg was opposed both by local Hindus and by Danish authorities who favored a different missionary style. He was known for caring about the welfare of the whole person. Nommensen was born in northern Germany and was sent to Sumatra as a Lutheran missionary. Working among the Batak people, he translated the scriptures into their language, and honored their native culture.

Martin, Bishop of Tours, died 397

Martin's pagan father enlisted him in the Roman army. Approached by a beggar, Martin cut his cloak in half and gave part to the man, whom he later understood as representing Christ. He asked to leave the army, but was jailed instead. After his release, he became a preacher, and later a bishop.

Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, teacher, died 1855

Kierkegaard was a Danish theologian whose writings also gave rise to the modern philosophy of existentialism. He frequently attacked the complacency of the state church of his day, as well as its desire to be accepted by polite society rather than be a stumbling block.
