2012 Hunger Walk

We would love to have a St. Luke's team at this year's Hunger Walk, but we need someone to lead the effort.  This is a great opportunity for those of you who care deeply about our work on hunger and food access... but who can't be here at St. Luke's on Tuesdays and Thursdays when the pantry is actually open.

If you are interested in leading a St. Luke's team at the Hunger Walk on Saturday, June 23rd please call or email Pastor Erik at your earliest convenience so that we can start making plans.

Death of the Rev. Ruth VanDemark

The Rev. Ruth E. VanDemark died on Saturday, June 9, 2012.  The funeral service will take place on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Wicker Park Lutheran Church, 2112 West LeMoyne Ave. (corner of Hoyne and LeMoyne), Chicago, IL 60622, at 11 a.m.  There will be a visitation in the fellowship hall from 9 until 10:30 a.m.  After the service, there will be a lunch at the congregation.

Pastors are invited to vest for the funeral service; the color of the day is green.

Pastor VanDemark was ordained on September 26, 1999, and began serving Wicker Park Lutheran Church on October 30, 1999. She was dean of the Central Conference from 2002 to 2005, and served on the synod's constitution and discipline committees.  Prior to, and while attending seminary, she worked as an attorney in her own law firm.  She brought a long history of community involvement in the Chicago area to her ministry at Wicker Park Lutheran.

Prayer Requests...

Please remember the following people and circumstances in your prayers:

  • Kate Fritz, for safety as she moves from Chicago to Virginia.
  • Heather Kulp's parents, and all families affected by the wildfires in Colorado.
  • Scott and Kenneth Shippy and Nucha Isarowong; Pat and Dorothea Kuhlman -- both households that have experienced break-ins in the last few weeks, that a sense of safety would be restored.
  • Ryan Gray's uncle, Ron, as he and those who love him respond to his recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
  • Catherine Davis, the mother of Barry Brewer, who suffered a stroke earlier this week.
  • Lee Brewer, son to Barry Brewer, that he would find clarity and a new vision for his life.
  • The family and friends of the Rev. Ruth VanDemark, as they celebrate her life and ministry and grieve her passing.
  • The family and friends of Dr. Carolyn Dorner, as they gather to mourn her death and celebrate her life.
  • Angelica Whitley, granddaughter-in-law to Kay Deacon, as she and those around her respond to her recent cancer diagnosis.
The ministry of prayer is the vocation of all Christians, and St. Luke's takes seriously its calling to pray for all in need. If you would like to be included on the prayer list, please contact the church office or Pastor Erik. Prayer requests remain on the list for three weeks before being removed, and requests can be renewed as often as needed.
