Helen Knowling, long-time member of St. Mary's, departed this life on Saturday, June 18. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 2 at 11:00am at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Dear Friends,

A few months ago, I spent some time in the St. Mary's archives at the Kansas City Public Library. One of the things I was looking for was the date the building was consecrated. The building was completed in 1887, dedicated on June 17, 1888, and consecrated 50 years later on June 19, 1938.

It is customary for a parish church to annually celebrate both its patronal feast and its feast of dedication or consecration. We celebrate the former on the feast of St. Mary the Virgin (Sunday closest to August 15), but have not celebrated the latter in recent memory. Because of other feasts that took precedence, vacations, and the like, we are finally getting around to it!

Join us on Sunday, July 10th at 8:00 or 10:00 to learn more about the history of our beautiful building, the theology behind its design and use, and an explanation about why it took 50 years for the Bishop to get around to consecrating our building!
