|
|
The scrip committee gave $5000 to the church from the scrip profits of 2020. (It always encourages people to buy when they see/hear about the big check!) Please continue to buy your scrip! Every scrip purchase adds up to big money by the end of the year! Contact Gail Voorhes at 760-271-7630 any time to get scrip. Remember this scrip are the same gift cards you buy in the store.

Weekly Greetings
St. Mary’s in the Valley
Thursday, September 9, 2021
Hello My Friends –
Hope you’ve all had a good week and are staying safe and healthy. From my perspective, even for a short week, it’s been busy and has left me feeling blah and not at all creative.
So, with your permission, I’ll just share a few posts that I have found particularly interesting, uplifting and meaningful. Hope that’s OK – that’s why I save these gems – they are meant to be shared with those I care about.
This is from a site called The Best of Health –
Life is too short.
Grudges are a waste of perfect happiness.
Laugh when you can.
Apologize when you should and let go of what you can.
Take chances. Give everything and have no regrets.
Life is too short to be unhappy.
You have to take the good with the bad.
Smile when you’re sad. Love what you’ve got and always remember what you had.
Always forgive but never forget. Learn from your
mistakes but never regret.
People change and things go wrong.
But always remember,
Life goes on!
Awareness Act is responsible for this next one –
There will be very painful moments in your life that will change you.
Let them make you stronger, smarter, and kinder.
But don’t you go and become someone that you’re not.
Cry. Scream if you have to. Then straighten out that crown and keep moving.
- Erin Van Vuren
And finally, from Alex Banayan, writing for Contemplative Monk –
When I interviewed Maya Angelou, she told me to write this sentence on my notepad and to never forget it:
“Every storm runs out of rain.”
I still think of that line to this day.
I think we should all think of that line every day!
Love and Peace – have a great week.

Advent Book Study Invitation
|
Have you ever asked what the Gospels really teach about the birth of Jesus? "Because of the importance of Christmas, how we understand the stories of Jesus's birth matters. What we think they are about - how we hear them, read them, interpret them - matters". This statement is from the preface of a book called The First Christmas, by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan. If you are interested in joining this book discussion group during Advent, please contact Fr. Phil or Cindy Dodson. We will make the time and the venue convenient for those who would like to read and talk about this compelling book.

Prayer for the Festival
Loving God, Author of life, in You we live and move and have our being. We ask that you revive us again in your mighty Spirit as we prepare our hearts for The Good News Festival. Inspire us to reach out to those who do not know you, and welcome them with open arms, without judgment, so that all may embrace your Good News, answer your call, and dance together with joy. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen

Help is Needed on Saturday the 11th

The First Methodist Church in Julian has again offered us their leftovers from their sale on 9/11/2021. Sherry Pope at the church asked that we come by 4:00 PM to choose leftovers and load. Pick up trailors and cars needed to transport the yard sale items. You can contact other to ride with them or meet at the Methodist Church in Julian
After we pick up items on Sat. from the Methodist Church, we will be unloading them in the Haven. Then on Sunday after church at about 11am, we will begin sorting and pricing what we have before we put the items in one of our storage sheds. Please try to come and help even if you can't make it at 11 o'clock. Then we will set up times for people to come during the week to finish up. As the saying goes : Many hands make light work! Empty boxes will also be a help as well as paper for wrapping.

Is God calling you to Centering Prayer? Two Opportunities to Explore
Centering Prayer will meet on September 13th, at 4:15 p.m.(prayer starts at 4:30 prompt) in person at the church. We have several copies of the updated version of Fr. Keatings's Open Mind, Open Heart, enough so that we probably don't need to share books. We will use this book for formation and we will practice lectio divina with our readings. The Friday morning Centering Prayer on Zoom continues at 8:30 a.m. for a short, half hour session of meditation only. If you want to know more and are interested in joining, please contact either Deb Lewallen ([email protected]) or Cindy Dodson ([email protected]).

Dear Parish family and friends,
On Sunday, we will offer special prayers on the 20th Anniversary of September 11, 2001. We mourn the loss of not just the lives of dear people but also the innocence that we have had to give up because we have had to use fear-planning in taking so many measures of safety. We now just think it is normal to take off our belts and shoes at the airports at the TSA check in!
We are seeking bids for the foundation repair and floor covering replacement. We will apply for grants from the Diocesan Property Committee. If you are interested to be on an advisory committee to deal with decisions on floor covering in the Nave after the foundation is repaired, please let us know.
The Finance Committee met, chaired by Cathy Knowles to begin budget planning for 2022. The committee heard a report from Virginia Pollack on the Endowment Funds performance, proposed investment changes and the grant requests for this year. We are grateful for Richard Wade's years of service. He will continue to assist us.
We appreciate the prayers and the support of everyone in our parish and the circles of friends. The pandemic has created some challenges and the continuing threat of the new variants means that we need to be diligent in our safety practices. We look forward to when we can meet again like we once did.
Blessings and much love,
Father Phil
