Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

A message from our senior warden

Hello Dear Friends at St. Mary’s –
Another Wednesday evening is here already – they arrive so quickly these days that I don’t know where the week has gone. I think perhaps going from Wednesday to Wednesday just seems to take less time than from Monday to Monday, or from Friday to Friday. All I really know is that I just don’t seem to be able to think of new and exciting things to share with you in such a short turn around time! So, bear with me, and I’ll see what I can come up with to keep you occupied for another week.
I do want to give a shout out to Gail Voorhes and Janice Backholer for their extraordinary efforts in keeping the St. Mary’s scrip program going during these difficult times. I know that I have been guilty of taking this great program for granted over the years, but this spring and summer I have really been amazed by the diligence and dedication that Gail and Janice put into keeping scrip going for our church. I know you are aware that scrip sales play an important part in St. Mary’s annual budget. Every year we have been able to count on around $10,000 in income from scrip sales to help support the work of our church. This year, when such a large part of our budget has relied on fund raisers to fill in our gaps, we face the real challenge of the likelihood of losing a significant portion of those fund raising dollars. Gail and Janice have made a point of not letting that happen with scrip. Please don’t forget that scrip is still available for you to purchase. I know you all are still buying groceries, gas, paying bills, or at least trying to! Also, our hard-earned dollars get spent at the pharmacies, restaurants and fast food eating places. Gail has scrip for all of these places. You can pay your Kohl’s bill, or you can order from Amazon, you can use scrip in so many ways, I can’t even begin to mention them all. Please help Gail, Janice and St. Mary’s keep the scrip program thriving. Gail will get those cards to you one way or another, I guarantee! Thank you, Gail and Janice for all that you do for all of us. We so appreciate your service to St. Mary’s and your wonderful stewardship of our scrip program.
Here are a couple of thoughts for the coming week. Do you read the paper or watch TV and think if you see one more event or happening that has been canceled due to COVID-19 you will just snap? Father Steve Schuneman posted this several weeks back – it’s from The God Article with Verna Wood.
Church Online – Not Canceled
Quiet Time With God – Not Canceled
Praying for the Sick – Not Canceled
Checking On a Friend – Not Canceled
Helping Others – Not Canceled
Being The Church – Now More Than Ever!
And finally, from the late Congressman John Lewis,
“So I say to you, walk with the wind, brothers and sisters, and let the spirit of peace and the power of ever lasting love be your guide.”
Peace and Health,
Connie

Dear Parish family and friends,
When heavy crashing waves abound on the shore, some us admire the awesome power, while the surfer dudes, exclaim, "Heavy!" They don't presume to calm the waves but they do get their boards and attempt to ride on the top of the powerful waves to achieve a clean ride to shore.
Our Gospel this week presents Jesus as the "ultimate Surfer Dude," and he does it without a board.
What is the faith meaning of the "surfing" Jesus for us? The Risen Christ co-exists and is accessible to us in all of our storms of life, including Covid-19, social unrest and everything else.
We, find out like Peter, that gravity works, and we know that the gravity of death will eventually have its day for each of us. In faith, now and at the hour of our deaths, we will receive the hand of the Risen Christ to lift us to safety and to our ultimate abode with Him.
So, let us hold in in faith, reach other to each other, pray, and in faith hope for some outcomes from this plague to rearrange our societal priorities toward better care of more people in our country and world. Covid-19 indicates that with viruses, we share our "worst" with each other; loving response with simply mask wearing and social distancing is what we can do for now, and when we are a completely re-gathered people, we hope that a new sense of care will reign.
Call me if you would like to talk or if you would like the reserved sacrament brought to your door.
Blessings and much love,
Father Phil
