Connie's Comments from our Bishop's Warden
Weekly Greetings
     St. Mary’s in the Valley
    Friday, January 14, 2022

Hello My Friends!

We’re enjoying a return to warmer weather and sunny skies. Now this is a California winter! I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of gloom and chillier days, and oh, those really chilly nights. But there is variety there, and it sure makes for some interesting days as we make our way through January.

The news wheels are moving slowly this week, so I’ll just float a reminder out there that the Bishop’s Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, January 18th at 6 pm. This is an important meeting since we will be approving the 2022 budget prior to its presentation at the annual meeting on February 6th. Stay tuned for details of the annual meeting. I’m sure Father Phil will be sharing more information as the occasion gets closer.

Additional information to be on the lookout for includes worship details for the time period when our sanctuary will be going through its overhaul. The tree roots have done their damage in the front right side of the sanctuary, but the real question is, how much additional damage might turn up once the carpet is really pulled back, and the workers get a better look at the floor. Keep your fingers crossed and say your prayers. We certainly are hoping for minimal additional problems.

Here are some shorter observations and thoughts for the coming week. The first is from Max Lucado in “Anxious for Nothing.”

When we see ourselves as God’s servants instead of God’s advisors, we are in a better place to trust his sovereignty.

And this, from Marvin J. Ashton:

If we could look into each other’s hearts and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

And finally, from Maya Angelou – by the way, have you read where she will be the first woman Imprinted on a quarter?

Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.

Peace and blessings dear ones,

Connie

Let the ones who are perfect throw the most prayers at those of us who are woefully far from perfect.
Be Sure and Get scrip cards. Contact Gail
Thank you to the twenty plus who have submitted pledge cards for the new year. We are hopeful to present a balanced budget this year without dipping into operational reserves. Your giving is appreciated!
An Invitation to Intentional Stewardship
Help us to insure a balanced budget with no borrowing from our reserve funds in the new year. We appreciate your participation in our stewardship.

Foundation Work to Begin
We appreciate help after the liturgy on Sunday, moving everything to the back of the nave.
We have scheduled with a contractor to begin the foundation repair work in the nave on Monday, January 17th. We may be required to meet outside or in the Haven for a Sunday or two, depending upon the scope of slab work and floor covering work which needs to be done. We ask for your patience. We want to get as much work done in this one disruption and also be able to take advantage of the diocesan property committee grant monies.
Centering Prayer
How About Starting the New Year with Centering Prayer?

Centering Prayer will meet on January 17, 2022 at 4:15 p.m.on Zoom. We have several copies of the updated version of Fr. Keatings's Open Mind, Open Heart, enough so that we probably don't need to share books. We will use this book for formation and we will practice lectio divina with our readings. The Friday morning Centering Prayer on Zoom continues at 8:30 a.m. for a short, half hour session of meditation only. If you want to know more and are interested in joining, please contact either Deb Lewallen ([email protected]) or Cindy Dodson ([email protected]).

Vicar's Voice
Dear Parish family and friends,

Parish life moves on. The finance committee met and and have prepared a budget for 2022. We are grateful for all those who have turned in signed pledge card. It heartens us that we surpassed our recent year pledge totals.

On Tuesday the 18th, the BC will receive the Budget recommendation and look at the final finance report for 2021, again a year of generous giving, and the surprising boon from Haven sales, Crafts, Bazaar, Yard Sales, Quilt Raffle, and the wonderful consistent revenue from scrip.

The BC will hear further reporting on an injury which occurred in preparation for the Bazaar. Cathy Knowles has interviewed and prepared a report with some recommendation for the practice of safety, especially at Bazaar time when we have so much stuff in our pathways.

The Annual Meeting is February 6th after the Sunday Liturgy. We will offer a resolution to adopt the by-laws proposed by the Diocese for Mission parishes. We will continue to have 7 B.C. members but the Bishop's Warden will also be an elected B.C. member. The candidates for B.C. 2022 are Laura Myers, Debbie Benson, and Connie Bley. We ask that chair people of Ministries in 2021 file their report to me and in a format which does not necessitate a retyping of material. Thank you!

The La Misa in English committee will meet with Fr. Lorenzo in a Zoom meeting on Tuesday the 19th to get further advice on implementing our program at St. Mary's.

We will not know how long it will take and the extent of the foundation and floor work. We do not know what the foundation looks like under the carpet, and what kind of floor preparation will have to be done for the next floor covering. This will have to be assessed based upon cost of labor and material. It is ideal to get the project done with only a single period of disruption, but also to take advantage of the Grant Money from the Property Committee of our Diocese.

As always pray for our parish. Any temptation to criticize or complain should be treated as God giving us the gift of discernment to increase the amount of our prayer time.

And always remember that anything we face in our parish life is quite mild compared to some really horrendous conditions in our country and world. How many people would love to have the "luxury" of our "problems?"

It is always a good time to pray.

I saw Dave Carpenter and he sends his greetings and his thanksgiving for all who have remembered Betty. We also celebrated the life of Stephen Courtney on Sunday. Virginia and her family, and Stephen's friend paid wonderful tributes to him.

Blessings and much love,

Father Phil
