May 10th: Mass in the Garden
On Tuesday, May 10th we gathered for a Mass in the Garden. Over 12 persons gathered for a Mass of the Earth with portions done in Spanish as part of our La Misa ministry. We are hoping to have a monthly Mass in the Garden as a way of building an ecumenical fellowship event for our community with an emphasis on caring for our earth. Fellowship with tamales, chips, and dessert followed. We are blessed with a lovely gardening community. Cindy Dodson and Laura Myers are our lay ministers for the La Misa program. We received a grant of $1800 from La Misa in English sponsors from Virginia Theological Seminary.

Good Morning St. Mary’s Friends –

I hope you are enjoying Southern California’s mid-Spring weather, and all of the beautiful flowers that are blooming everywhere. While we can enjoy the warmth, and sometimes even the heat of the daylight hours, when the sun goes down so do the temperatures. My grandson has had several baseball games scheduled for 6 pm in the past weeks. We  start out in our short sleeves and light clothing, and as soon as we lose the sun, out come the winter jackets, heavy sweatshirts and often even gloves and blankets! But I guess that’s baseball – I’m sure the same thing happens at Petco Park whenever the Padres have a night game. Dress in layers and be prepared has to be everyone’s motto.

Things at St. Mary’s are looking bright and fresh. After much hard work and the diligent attention of Virginia Pollack and band of faithful painters, our sanctuary should be looking lovely with its new coat of paint. We still have some finishing touches to complete but for the most part, our center for worship is ready to go. We’ve been enjoying our new surrounds since Holy Week, and if you haven’t been with us throughout COVID, we urge you to join us again on Sunday mornings as we celebrate word and sacrament together.

My thoughts to share this week come from the Clergy Coaching Network and were written by Brene Brown.
My mom taught us never to look away from people’s pain.
The lesson was simple: Don’t look away. Don’t look down. Don’t pretend not to see hurt. Look people in the eye. Even when their pain is overwhelming.

And when you are in pain, find the people who can look you in the eye.

We need to know we are not alone, especially when we are hurting.
This lesson is one of the greatest gifts of my life.

Thanks for listening – or maybe I should say, Thanks for reading! I wish you all a blessed week to come – free of pain and worry, and surrounded by love.

Prayers and Squares
Prayers and Squares News

Just a reminder that Prayers and Squares continues to meet on Saturday mornings at 10 am in the Haven unless there is another activity scheduled.

I also wanted to mention again the procedure when asking for a quilt.

1. First be sure that the person is accepting of prayers.

2.Fill out a Prayer request form which will now be in the Narthex on the table.

3.Put the request in the hallway into the labeled P&SQ box, or call Sandy Bedard or one of the other Prayers and Squares ladies, or Fr. Phil if necessary.

4.Your request will be picked up and ready to be blessed the following Sunday if possible. However, it is always a good idea to notify me that a request has been made. I then sew on the Legend and ask Fr. Phil to do a print out which goes to the recipient along with the quilt once it has been tied by the congregation.

Remember too, that friends and family members may also tie knots and say prayers at any time.

Centering Prayer
Centering Prayer as a Life Discipline

Centering Prayer will meet on May 16, 2022 at 4:15 p.m.on Zoom. We have several copies of the updated version of Fr. Keatings's Open Mind, Open Heart, enough so that we probably don't need to share books. We will use this book for formation and we will practice lectio divina with our readings. The Friday morning Centering Prayer on Zoom continues at 8:30 a.m. for a short, half hour session of meditation only. If you want to know more and are interested in joining, please contact either Deb Lewallen ([email protected]) or Cindy Dodson ([email protected]).

Vicar's Voice
Dear Parish family and friends,

We had wonderful participation in our Mass in the Garden. It is our goal to comprise a monthly ecumenical gathering in the garden to draw together anyone who seeks fellowship based upon gratitude for our good earth and our stewardship responsibility. We had about 10 gardening members of our Community Garden. After the Earth Mass, we had a lovely time of fellowship. We are pleased to meet with people of different faith backgrounds.

We are closer to finishing the painting and baseboards in our worship space. We are grateful for all those who have helped in the project: Virginia, Cindy, Laura, Carol, Gary, Dave, Patrick, Bastion, Renee, Karen, Colin and others. We hope to work on some more maintenance projects this summer.

Below is one of Maria's cactus flowers, which only blooms but for a very short time. They represent the hope of the Easter season.

With Easter hope,

Father Phil
