Weekly Greetings
St. Mary’s in the Valley Thursday,
January 21, 2021

Summer seems to have returned! Lovely warm weather this week with a high of 87 on Friday? hard to believe, but then I’m mid-West born and bred with an eleven-year Rocky Mountain experience, so what can I really say about the weather! I have learned to appreciate the varieties found in different parts of the country, and I’m really hard pressed to pick a favorite. There is something to love and appreciate in all of our beautiful fifty states.

I forgot to mention this last week, so I definitely want to remember to remind everyone that we will be having our annual meeting via Zoom on Sunday, January 24th. That means that Marisa is working diligently to get the annual report put together and printed. All of us who are ministry heads, or committee chairs will need to put together a synopsis of what went on in your area during the past year. In many cases, that might not have meant too much in 2020 since so many of our activities were curtailed. Do the best you can and try to get your reports to Marisa
just as soon as possible.

I hope that all of you are feeling well and staying safe. It appears that the COVID numbers for the County of San Diego and most of the rest of California continue to rise. Receiving the vaccine is in the future for most of us, so we are home-bound and following the rules as best we can despite the rather grim and depressing outlook. It is so important to maintain the appropriate distancing, and to wear our masks, and just to be extremely cautious in all that we do on a daily basis. I worry about everyone, and you are all in my prayers. Keep focusing on staying healthy and strong. I’m going to throw optimism into the mix – maintaining a positive attitude is a huge piece of pandemic precautions and cannot be underestimated.

I have a couple of new thoughts for this coming week, both having to do with prayer, and both were posted by fellow members of my last church in Illinois. The first came from Pastor David Hewitt who now has a church in Indiana. David said, “As Paul wrote in 1st Thessalonians 5:17, ‘Pray without ceasing.’ “This is how you pray continually – not by offering prayers in words, but by joining yourself to God through your whole way of life, so that your life becomes one continuous and uninterrupted prayer.” - St. Basil the Great

The second comes from the famous author, Max Lucado, and was posted by my friend, Susan, who was our choir director at Trinity Lutheran in Mattoon, IL. She was also my boss when I worked at the local community college! Mr. Lucado says, “Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the One who hears it and not in the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference.” Amen!

Peace and love,
Connie

Thanksgivingtide 2020

Dear members and friends of St. Mary’s-in-the-Valley,

This has been an interesting and unplanned year, to say the very least.  The Covid-19 pandemic has forced us into new parish worship, gathering, business, learning and fellowship formats.  And we have tried to make transitions to virtual forms of communication.

As we prepare a budget for 2021, we are faced with some stark realities forced upon us by the Covid-19 pandemic and by the departure of people.  We passed our 2020 budget based on the assumption of revenues from fundraising, chiefly relying upon the Fall Bazaar, the Bluegrass Festival, rental of our facilities and the sale of quiche.  We have received no revenue from these venues this year, leaving us in a budget deficit for 2020 and requiring us to dip into our parish reserves.

As we endeavor to present a balanced budget for 2021, we need to be able to anticipate the revenues that come from the generosity of our membership.  The Covid-19 restrictions will most likely prevail for another year which will not allow our traditional fundraising events.  Our response will require budget adjustment to reassess personnel needs, ministerial and outreach efforts, dipping into available parish endowments, while we look for doable new fundraising opportunities.

To this end, we ask for your prayerful consideration of your financial commitment for the calendar year 2021.  Our proposed budget will be presented at the Bishop’s Committee on December 15th.  We would like to have your commitment cards by December 13th to help us in our budget planning.  With personnel cuts, we also may need to have help in the office and with the various kinds of onsite maintenance tasks that arise.  Your time and talent offerings are also valuable stewardship commitments.

A commitment card is enclosed, and we are very grateful for your giving for the survival of our important mission and ministries of our parish.

In Christ,

Father Philip R. Cooke                             Ms. Connie Bley
Vicar                                                              Bishop’s Warden

There's always time to pledge; it's not the amount you pledge, it's a courteous saying from your heart that you are with us in the support of the ministry.

Vicar's Voice
Dear Parish family and friends,

The Epiphany theme again this week is the Call of Christ. Our Annual Meeting is a review of how we performed the call of Christ in our parish life and how we will fulfill our calling in the New Year. Please join us for the Zoom meeting.

Our Bishop, The Rt. Rev'd Susan Brown Snook will be making a Virtual Visitation on Sunday, February 7th. She will be videoed for our Youtube liturgy. She will be at a Zoom meeting with our candidates for confirmation, reception and reaffirmation at 4:30 p.m. followed by meeting with the BC on Thursday the 4th. On Sunday the 7th, we will have our Courtyard liturgy and then have a Zoom meeting with our Bishop at 10:30 a.m. to present our candidates for reception and reaffirmation. I hope that you can be a part of this event with our Bishop.

Coming up:

January 24, Sunday, 3 Epiphany, Youtube liturgy plus 9:30 a.m. Courtyard service and our Zoom Annual Meeting at 11 a.m.

We will have our next study in the Epistle to Romans on Wednesday, January 27th.

The call of Christ is upon all of us as individuals and as a parish community. We should be seekers who are ready to discern what the call of Christ asks of us.

Blessings and much love,

Father Phil
