A Prayer for Memorial Day
Gracious God, your Son Jesus said that there was no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friend; we thank you for the heroes in the service of the freedom of our country who have laid down their lives in befriending sacrifice for our country. We thank you for the sacrifice of their families who have had to learn to live without them and we beseech you for the justice of blessed reward for them in your heavenly kingdom. And may their example inspire us to make the lesser sacrifices of being grateful citizens for their service but also in our service for the greater and common good of our country. Grant this for the sake of Jesus Christ who laid down his life for us all. Amen.

A message from our senior warden

Good Morning St. Mary’s Friends –
The weeks go by so quickly, it’s difficult to believe we are starting our tenth week of sheltering in place and social distancing. That means it has been 9 Sundays without gathering for worship. While I’m so appreciative of Father Phil’s continuing efforts to bring the Word to us in as many ways as possible, there is still something missing in not having the Eucharist each Sunday. Now that we are working towards formulating plans for a phased reopening, perhaps we will soon be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. None of us knows the answers yet, but we are watching and waiting for further guidance both from government entities as well as from the diocese. Bishop Susan meets with all of the clergy weekly via Zoom to discuss how we will be moving forward, and as you might imagine, worship will look a little different in the months ahead. At our BC meeting on Tuesday evening, we began to look at how we can meet the needs of everyone, and still be cognizant of health and safety concerns that are still very much a part of our day to day lives. Any reopening will be planned, it will come in phases, it will be slow, it will take time, and we will all need to realize that the end result will look and feel different than what we have been used to in the past. Together, with God’s help, and with Father Phil’s leadership, the people of St. Mary’s will endure.
Last Sunday was a real red-letter day for St. Mary’s in the Valley. For those of you who missed worship on You Tube, Bishop Susan was with us, virtually that is! She gave a wonderful sermon, and when worship was over, we left You Tube, and with the magic of technology several of us met with Bishop Susan, Father Phil and Karen, and finally after almost nine months of incredible service to St. Mary’s, Father Phil was officially installed as our Vicar! While some of the pomp and circumstance of a church installation might have been missing, the service was lovely and meaningful. Bishop Susan led the service, and I had the pleasure of presenting Father Phil as the person chosen and called by St. Mary’s in the Valley to be our Vicar, and also to announce that he had accepted our call. Rob Lewallen presented Father Phil with a Bible which represented the Word of God and the Good News of salvation. Following that, Bishop Susan led us in a Renewal of our Baptismal Vows. After, as the Bishop’s Warden, I presented Phil with a Book of Common Prayer representing the offering of our prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings to God. As our Prayer Leader for the service, Cathy Knowles led us in A Litany for the Mission of the Church. When the Litany was finished, Sandy Bedard presented oil stock which represented the laying on of hands for those who seek healing or forgiveness. And finally, the Symbols of Holy Communion, the Chalice and Paten were presented by Richard and Pamela Wade. Following a Prayer of Thanksgiving, Bishop Susan officially commended the people of St. Mary’s in the Valley to Father Phil’s love and care, and in turn, she commended to our love and care our new Vicar, colleague and friend, Phil! I wish we all could have been together for this auspicious occasion. I know we’ve said it many times already over the past nine months, but welcome Father Phil and Karen. You have been in our hearts since the day you arrived in Ramona. St. Mary’s has been truly blessed with your presence and with your ministry.
Thought for the week: This comes from Act-as-one.org
How would we act if we truly believed we are one? If we truly believe that each of our actions affects everyone else? What would we do differently each day?
One . . .
One tree can start a forest;
One smile can begin a friendship;
One hand can lift a soul;
One word can frame the goal;
One candle can wipe out darkness;
One laugh can conquer gloom;
One hope can raise your spirits;
One touch can show you care;
One life can make the difference, be that one today.
Stay strong and stay healthy my friends –
Peace,
Connie

Congratulations!
Congratulations to Andrew Simmons on the opening of a new restaurant. Along with his Mamma Ramona's, the same now houses the Wow Bao take out chains.
It’s hot asian Bao buns, rice bowls and potstickers. They offer carryout and delivery from inside Mamma Ramona’s or you can order at Orangecrate.com under Wow Bao. The food is delicious and they’ve had rave reviews since opening it a week ago.
If any member would like to try it, they can use coupon WOWB at checkout and Andrew will take 7% off the cost.
One can get full service for both restaurants and crucial take out and delivery through his Orangecrate.com delivery service. And this is an important service during this pandemic.

Dear Parish family and friends,
I am pleased to be your "official" vicar now, if virtual installation really counts?! But in the age of the pandemic every parish now has an alternate name: St. Zoom's-on-the-Internet Episcopal Church. Our cyber location makes us "omni-present" so that is quite a miraculous achievement.
And Zoom we will continue to do until we can begin to stage re-gathering. Probably no re-gathering activity until after June 21st. Church gatherings are in Phase 3 of the State's re-gathering guidelines, so we're not there yet. In using Zoom and live stream, we probably have changed forever, because we will probably continue to take advantage of these for meetings and studies even after we re-gather.
The BC met and will be developing a re-gathering plan with best practices to safe-guard our health and we will continue to Zoom and do some streaming.
I will be discontinuing the Facebook live Morning Prayer and Compline since from the statistics they are not being used. Each person can go to the links for praying from the Prayerbook services that are posted each morning on our Facebook page.
Please take note of the Zoom invitations above:
Sunday school for the kids on Saturday, followed by Adult Inquirers' Class, Happy Hour on Sunday Evening and a Bible Study on the Gospel of John on Wednesday evening a 7 p.m.
Blessings and much love,
Father Phil
