Weekly Greetings
St. Mary’s in the Valley
Friday, July 16, 2021
Hello Everyone!
So happy to be back with you – this is the second week in a row, so perhaps my routine has been reestablished. I’ve come to appreciate the normalcy of knowing what to expect from day to day. That’s not to say I’m an avid schedule follower, or that I resist change, but there’s certainly something to be said for being confident that the days have an ebb and flow, and I’m happy to enjoy that aspect of daily life!
We’re enjoying a slight respite from the sky high temperatures, and I’ve noticed a fairly steady pattern of most days being in the eighties for the next week or s. Somehow, that just seems so much better than facing all of those days in the nineties!
This week brings our July Bishop’s Committee meeting. See you all on Zoom this Tuesday evening at 6 pm. As usual, please let Father Phil or me know if you can’t be there. He will be forwarding the agenda, and financials should come from Pam Patterson and minutes from Carol
Weissenberger.
A while back I mentioned that we were trying to reconstruct the list of St. Mary’s members who had made donations when the olive trees were planted. I asked that if you had made a donation to please let me know as I was trying to compile a list of donors. I have heard from three people, and they head my list, but I can’t help but think there may be more of you out there. You can email me at [email protected] or give me a call at 303-621-5513.
The thought for this week comes from Mother Teresa of Calcutta –
“People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.
If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good. Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.
Give your best anyway.
For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.”
Have a safe, healthy and productive week ahead.
Blessings and peace,
Connie

Clear the Haven Curbside Sidewalk Sale on Saturday, July 17th
In our effort to clear the Haven, we are having a curbside Sidewalk Sale on Saturday, July 17,2021. Please arrive at 7 a.m. to help set up. The sale will "officially" run from 8 a.m. until noon. We will set up tables on the sidewalk on San Vicente allowing maximum visibility to the traffic. We appreciate all helpers who can help set up and take down. After the sale we will have to find a place for remaining items either in sheds or get them to charities or non-profits which can use the items.

Video for the Good News Festival on December 3-4 with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry at the Town and Country Resort in San Diego. Think about friends you would like to invite.
Prayer for the Festival
Loving God, Author of life, in You we live and move and have our being. We ask that you revive us again in your mighty Spirit as we prepare our hearts for The Good News Festival. Inspire us to reach out to those who do not know you, and welcome them with open arms, without judgment, so that all may embrace your Good News, answer your call, and dance together with joy. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen

Foundation Repair Update
As you know we have significant ruptures in the foundation of the nave and altar area of the church. We have an assessment and a bid for $8600 to cut the concrete, assess the subterranean cause of the cracking, resolve the issue and repour a 6 inch section of the slab with rebar. We have submitted a claim with the church insurance agency. We can only get insurance coverage if the cracks has been caused by sinkholes due to water drainage/leakage issues. We have submitted a description of our situation to the Property Committee of our Diocese to seek direction, advice and possible grants to assist in the cost of the repair. We will keep you informed as we seek resolution.

Sacred Ground gathers via Zoom on July 21st at 7:30 p.m. The work of racial justice is on-going and it is a continual work in our hearts so that we are unlearning bad habits of bias and learning how to be truly open to the appreciative regard for all people. Coming up will be a movie premiere in October, a documentary on The Rev. Pauli Murray, the first African American woman Episcopal priest, a civil rights movement architect, women's rights activists and LGBTQ rights visionary, and one who influenced the lives of Justices Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Thurgood Marshall.

Dear Parish family and friends,
Jesus remarked about the masses that followed him: "they were like sheep without a shepherd." There is always shepherding to do in our world because the states of health, wealth, education and welfare are often so dramatically uneven in our society. The church is called to shepherd in helping to bring the general level of the common good in health, education and welfare up so that all can justly enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This is in part what salvation health in this lifetime means. Since we are so small and our efforts can seem to be but band aids on gaping social wounds, part of our ministry is to influence the governmental and corporate entities who have the means and presence to promote systemic efforts for the common good of everyone. For example, we are a better democracy, if we make it easy and accessible for people to participate through voting.
Cindy Dodson has sit in on Zoom meeting for Latino ministry in our diocese which emphasizes more providing the setting for those who share the same cultural identity, and not so much just the language. Many Latino persons are adept in the English language even as they still share important cultural heritage identity. Parishes can promote a setting for persons who are blending cultures.
The Outreach Committee is gearing up for a fall program for school children and are seeking a new sponsorship relationship with some new vendors since K-Mart has left Ramona. Debbie and Dawn are working on this sponsorship effort.
I hope that you are having a blessed summer!
Blessings and much love,
Father Phil
