Weekly Greetings
St. Mary’s in the Valley
Friday, June 11, 2021
Hello Friends –
It has been a while and I’m happy to be catching up with all of you. Actual summer is almost here, and these last spring days have been filled to overflowing, at least for me. My work schedule has been full, and I find that when I have my work hat on, the more creative part of me that usually writes this letter sort of shuts down, and the ideas just aren’t there. We’re at the part of the month where work is more manageable, so I’m getting myself back in gear.
Next Tuesday, June 15th, the BC will be meeting again. The meetings continue to be on Zoom, and everyone should receive agendas from Father Phil, financial info from Pam Patterson, and minutes from Carol Weissenberger. Please let Father Phil or me know if you can’t attend.
Once thing the BC will be discussing is whether to start up our traditional 4th of July Fireworks get together again this year. Since many of the COVID restrictions are loosening up, several of us would like to see St. Mary’s revive this long standing event. Everyone should know, by this time, that the St. Mary’s parking lot is a primo location to enjoy the Ramona fireworks show. And since Ramona is planning on holding this event, what better place to be on the evening of the 4th than right here on our very own property. Details and a decision will be made public next week so consider this a potential “save the date” notification.
Have you been by the church to see our new labyrinth? Thanks to Father Phil and his extraordinary assistant, Karen, our barren little patch of tree roots has been transformed into a beautiful new labyrinth. While there is still work remaining to be done, it is beautiful right now.
We have been blessed, not only with Father Phil’s vision, but the hours of labor that have gone into this project. Father Phil has some great ideas of how the labyrinth can be used as well as how it can be personalized. Thank you, Father Phil and Karen! And I’m pretty sure Father Phil would also want us to include the Cookes’ yard man, Jaime, for the assistance and labor he provided.
Here are a couple of thoughts for the coming week. The first is from Women Working:
WALK AWAY from people who put you down. Walk away from fights that will never be resolved. Walk away from trying to please people who will never see your worth. The more you walk away from things that poison your soul, the healthier you will be.
And the second comes from Mindfulness Ireland:
When someone begins to tell you the difficult parts of their story, pull up a chair, lean in close and recognize they are offering you a gift. A part of their journey. A piece of their heart. So listen closely, avoid judgment, receive it with gratitude, and treasure the rare gift you’ve been given. The gift of a friend who trusts you with their heart.
Peace and love my friends – it’s good to be back with you!
Connie

Sacred Ground is an exploration and sharing about race relations in our country. We have been blessed by the sharing. The next session will be on June 16th. We are learning to confront our ignorance regarding injustices to people of color.

Is God calling you to Centering Prayer? Two Opportunities to Explore
The Centering Prayer Group continues to meet, via Zoom, every Monday at 4:30 p.m. ending promptly at 5:45 p.m. Centering Prayer is a method of contemplative prayer in which we rest silently in the presence of God, releasing thoughts and feelings, surrendering ourselves in love to the Divine presence and action in our lives. We do this in silence, with the help of a sacred word or phrase, known only to ourselves. After the 20 minute silence, we typically have a formation period with readings or film, followed by faith sharing and discussion. If you want to know more and are interested in joining, please contact either Deb Lewallen ([email protected]) or Cindy Dodson ([email protected]).
A Friday morning Centering Prayer groups has started. The format is the same except that there will be no formation, sharing or discussion. The planned schedule is 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m., every Friday. If you are interested, contact Cindy Dodson ([email protected]).
We are looking forward to meeting in person again soon. We will keep you posted.

Dear Parish family and friends,
There are lots of things to do as we gear up for post-pandemic re-gathering.
Some of the things that need to be done:
1-Fix the nave foundation which has a growing crack. Rob Lewallen is helping us with a plan and there will be expense involved.
2-Organizing the community garden with some meetings. Bob Lloyd,a current gardener will be a contact person for us. We will implement some communication strategies with the gardeners, do a tool and equipment inventory, and set a strategy regarding the water bill.
3-Re-vamping of the website is in process.
4-Clearing the Haven so use for meetings can resume.
5-Develop some Outreach strategies.
6-Prepare for doing full liturgies again with music, keyboardist, choirs (vocal and handbell)
7-Return to Coffee hour fellowship
8-Develop some evangelistic strategies for welcoming newcomers in our community to St. Mary's.
9-Develop some opportunities for Labyrinth walking
10-Plan for Fundraising events like the Bazaar, Bluegrass and the Building use groups, e.g. AA
These are some of the rising tasks in the post-pandemic era. We will be different in this new era, and we will still continue to use Zoom meetings. We do face the challenge of relevancy to the lives of new people who have come into our area.
The Gospel lesson for this week has to do with the Kingdom of God and it being so "natural" that we often miss it and cannot see it. How can we "see" the Kingdom of God in our lives today?
Hope to see you in church. Part of the post-pandemic re-training involves recovering from our "attendance atrophy." Why go to church when I can watch it on Youtube in my pajamas?
Blessings and much love,
Father Phil
