St. Tammany Parish Hospital is celebrating National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with "Scan, Screen, Save" women's health special featuring mammograms and bone density exams at special prices for women who call during Oct. to schedule screenings anytime in 2010.

Mammograms are recommended for women 40 years old and older and bone density screens for women 65 years old and older. Screenings require physician orders. Appointments must be made during Oct., but may take place later in the year.

The Breast Center and Cordes Pavilion offer the added benefit of digital mammography.

"These all-digital resources in both Mandeville and Covington mean fast, comfortable diagnostic testing for our patients and exceptionally high resolution images for our physicians," Pat Maltese, STPH head of radiology, said.
Valuable Health Opportunity Free to Patients

Patients can attend STPH's Free Fall Health Fair and Screening Day, 8:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 30 at Paul D. Cordes Outpatient Pavilion.

"We are offering a free health fair and screening event because we are committed to our mission of providing comprehensive world-class healthcare to our community," Melonie Lagalante, STPH outpatient pavilion director said. "This means providing highly valuable and innovative screenings not typically offered at free health fairs."

"Early detection of health risks or problems through screenings offers the greatest potential to diagnose diseases at their earliest stages when the best chances for cures exist."

Services will include free educational offerings about colorectal health, sleep apnea, heart health and exercise education to promote improved flexibility, among other conditions. The event will also feature complimentary hand and foot massages and blood pressure and body mass index assessments. Tours of the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment will be available. Door prizes and free refreshments will also be provided.

Local physicians will conduct informal informational discussions on a variety of pertinent health topics throughout the day with question and answer sessions.
