| Fr. John's Branch - We remember them . . . St. Paul said that the last enemy to be overcome is death. He was not referring to physical death but rather, that of all the things that bedevil us in life, that bend us out of shape, that consume inordinate amounts of brain time, that cause worry and anxiety, our concern about the change called death is the last to be overcome. Paul knew that death is the topic most likely to roil the waters of inner peace. The genius of Christianity is that death, this universally experienced "last enemy to be overcome," is the very foundation of our faith. Our symbol is the instrument of death used in many cultures and especially in the Roman culture of the first century when roads were lined with the crucified. Had Jesus lived in another era our symbol might be a headsman's axe, a guillotine, a hangman's noose, a cluster of rifles, an electric chair or a syringe emblazoned with skull and crossbones. We're all about death, because we're all about resurrection and the hope it brings. We believe that death has been overcome. As the preface to the Sanctus at requiems proclaims, we believe that in death "life is changed, not ended." This is not to say that believers do not experience heart-rending grief. We grieve, feel lost and confused, ask "Who am I now?" We become angry at reality, and all of these sentiments of grief are sure indicators that we are human, as human as the one who cried at the death of his friend, Lazarus. But as Paul exhorts us, we "Do not grieve as those without hope." We have been shown that death is not the end. Every seven days we gather in celebration on the day of the week when our spiritual forebears were first shown that in death life is changed, not ended. This Sunday, at 10:30, we will gather with the specific intention of remembering those whose lives have been changed, not ended. Re-membering means re-joining, re-connecting with the "great cloud of witnesses" bound by love to us and us to them. It is our yearly celebration of the reality of the communion of saints - so many names and faces who sometimes press in so close we can feel their presence. Join us for yet another "only at St. Mark's!" occurrence . . . an Easter liturgy in celebration of life and its many changes . . . on a Sunday right in the middle of Lent . . . as we remember them. |
| Rev. Sue's Tendril: "Ailments of the Curia" Last week I listed the first eight of the fifteen "Ailments of the Curia" discussed by Pope Francis during his annual Christmas greetings to the clergy who run the central administration of the Roman Catholic Church. They are applicable to all of us, all year-round, particularly during Lent when we are charged to undergo self-reflection. Provided below are the remaining seven. Please consider contemplating one of them each day of the week. Day 1: Committing the "Terrorism of Gossip" - It's the sickness of cowardly people who, not having the courage to speak directly, talk behind people's back. Day 2: Glorifying One's Bosses - It's the sickness of those who court their superiors, hoping for their benevolence. They are victims of careerism and opportunism, they honor people who aren't God. Day 3: Being Indifferent to Others - When, out of jealousy or cunning, one finds joy in seeing another fall rather than helping him up and encouraging him. Day 4: Having a "Funeral Face" - In reality, theatrical severity and sterile pessimism are often symptoms of fear and insecurity. The apostle must be polite, serene, enthusiastic, and happy and transmit joy wherever he goes. Day 5: Wanting More - When the apostle tries to fill an existential emptiness in his heart by accumulating material goods, not because he needs them but because he'll feel more secure. Day 6: Forming "Closed Circles" that Seek to be Stronger than the Whole - This sickness always starts with good intentions but as time goes by, it enslaves its members by becoming a cancer that threatens the harmony of the body and causes so much bad - scandals - especially to our younger brothers. Day 7: Seeking Worldly Profit and Showing Off - It's the sickness of those who insatiably try to multiply their powers and to do so are capable of calumny, defamation, and discrediting others, even in newspapers and magazines, naturally to show themselves as being more capable than others. Again, thank you, Pope Francis for being so direct! May each of us take your words to heart. |
| Fr. Alden's Leaf - Love Sermons For Lent To quote from evangelist Ravi Zacharais, "If it bleeds, it leads." That's the news today on television, and in print. And yet: How many husbands come home faithfully to their wives every evening?; their names are not printed in the newspaper; how many salesmen deliver a quality product in the honesty of a competitive market?; how many players perform fully with no thought of HGH?; how many wives at work, or at home, day in and day out, support their families in every possible way?. In reality the far greater number of people are like ourselves. They do not voluntarily hurt another; steal from one; or kill in anger; most of them live their lives, without having to deal with the police, the courts of law,or defense lawyers. We pray at Rite1 Post Communion "...O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace that we .... do all such works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in." I pray that my sermons for Lent are demonstrations of how this can be done. "Go in Peace to Love and Serve the Lord." And as Jesus commanded, "Your neighbor as yourself." |
Children and Youth
Callie Bennett & Olivia Feeney, Directors of Christian Formation For Children
Shane Totten, Youth Minister
Christian Formation for Children
Callie and Olivia's Vine: Hey Ya'll! Our Christian Formation classes are going great and we love our time together! This upcoming Sunday we will be getting a little messy with our lesson and we will be painting with non-washable paint. So please send your kiddos with a change of messy clothes to switch into. We have been so lucky to have our 'snowbird' Olivia and unfortunately we only have her for two more Sundays. We know spring break is upon us, but if you are here please come to class on Sunday so we can show her all of our love. We NEED YOU to volunteer for St. Mark's Christian Formation for Children Ministry for next school year!!! Olivia is ending her stay at St. Mark's by the end of March and Callie is moving on by the end of the summer complete her advanced degree and plan her wedding. The plan is for Parents and Adult Volunteers to meet with Callie and Father Kyle on YOUTH SUNDAY, MAY 3 after WORSHIP2 to plan and implement the Children's "Sunday School" Program that will coincide with the 9:15 Family Service to begin again in October 2015. There will be a bounce house/water slide and refreshments for the children while we meet. PLEASE PRAY FOR ST. MARK'S CHILDREN'S CHRISTIAN FORMATION PROGRAM AND SEARCH YOUR HEART IF YOU ARE CALLED TO SERVE. Friend Fact: Olivia and Callie have very similar TV show interests and get way too invested in certain shows and characters.
Youth Sundays March 15th and 22nd --- Father John and Carl will be leading the next two Family Services while the Tottens are dancing in Ireland. Youth are encouraged to join their families in the pews for the next couple of weeks and/or assist with passing out the bulletins, carrying up the cross, etc... Please see Callie and Olivia upon arrival if you are interested in helping. There will not be a Tuesday Night Youth Group meeting during the week of Spring Break, but rather will resume at the normal time the following week. As well, the Sunday Morning Youth Class will resume after Spring Break. So, to all the Youth out there --- enjoy your break and spend as much time with your families as possible! Sincerely, The Totten Family |

Through play and socialization we make available opportunities for insight and allow for creative expression. Volunteers are needed for this intimately holy ministry. Please contact Cheryl Mueller (272-8826) or Kyle if you are interested in profound joy and sharing your gifts |

| Liz Doyle, "Granny Nanny": Our own Liz Doyle, the "Granny Nanny" would love to sit for your little ones....night or day! She has been a member of our parish family for years and has helped as a volunteer with our young families and their children. Ask most any of them for references. Liz was a former teacher, and has a master's degree in childhood psychology. According to her though, her best "training" has been her hands on experience with her own 13 grandchildren who range in age from 16 to 1. As she says, she's seen it all! Call her for loving, experienced care for your children or grandchildren. Liz would also appreciate anyone telling their friends and neighbors about her if they need any child care help . You can reach Liz at home (239-389-1833) or on her cell (239-293-3144).
