Attention Wingsuit Flyers: Exits from Side Doors Suspended!

Contributed by John Hart

Our underwriter has informed us that they consider wing suit and aircraft formation flying an unapproved operation.  If we file a hull claim that is a result of a wing suit strike from an attempted formation flight or with a wing suit jumper, we are now on notice that the operator's continuing insurance coverage will be subject to termination.  If we want to engage in this high risk activity then it will be at your own risk and others in the skydiving insurance group will not be subject to a rate increase due to our desire to engage in what is an unnecessary operation.

The Skydiving Industry had 11 wing suit aircraft tail strikes last year.  It is really very simple math, if we don't do something to correct this problem, then we are forcing the insurance industry to do something about it.  Their only means of correcting the problem is either through overall rate increases or the elimination of coverage for claims as a result of a wing suit strike.  I think we can all agree that neither outcome is acceptable.

I know there is a lot of activity already with respect to standardizing and regulating wing suit jumping and there is also a lot of resistance to it's regulation.  I have heard the argument that USPA does not regulate freeflying or Crew activities so why regulate wing suit jumping?  I would argue that those two activities are not causing the same problem that the wing suit jumpers are causing with aircraft collisions.  Let's not wait to do something until someone brings down a whole airplane as a result of a wing suit jumper ripping the horizontal stabilizer right off the fuselage.

This is a YouTube link a wing suit instructor developed for his safe wing suit exit for everyone's consideration.  I am not saying this is the only safe way to wing suit exit but it definitely appears to be one excellent way to avoid that costly tail strike. I estimate that it will take about 1000 jump tickets to pay for a minimally damaged tail strike.

Currently we do not have a wing suit training syllabus in place, Gene and I see it as a wise idea from an investment and pro-active risk management standpoint to temporarily stand down from wing suit jumps until a syllabus and procedure manual for wing suit jumps is put in place.  We would like to hear from our wingsuit community on what they think should be included in this syllabus.

Once the syllabus is in place Start Skydiving will be requiring a yellow tag on all wing suit jumper's containers as recognition of successfully passing our wing suit 1st jump school for side door aircraft for the pilot or loader to see. No bright yellow tag, no jump! Additionally wingsuit flyers will need to sign a financial responsibility document.

New Marketing Initiative at Start Skydiving

Contributed by John Hart

Over the years jumpers have asked us if we have large window decals for their vehicles.  So I thought, what better way to promote our great DZ than with some cool Start Skydiving window decals!  We have designed three decals printed on see-through material so that they are street legal.  Check them out below.

Here is the really cool part about this marketing initiative.  You allow us to place your choice of decal on your rear window and we will place "one lift ticket"  per month Feb.-Nov. on your account. This is a $230.00 value!  We will replace the sticker whenever they show serious wear.

All you have to do to participate is email John@startskydiving.com and tell me which decal you would like.  Decals will be available to install within the upcoming week.

I will be out this weekend installing decals so come on out.

Thank you for helping us to share our great sport with the community.

Salute to the Military

MSgt. Michael Hunter
Master Sergeant Michael Hunter

Master Sgt. Michael Hunter received the nation's third highest medal for combat valor, two years after he took control of a faltering mission that ultimately led to the deaths of more than 100 insurgents and helped NATO destroy entrenched enemy bunkers in western Afghanistan.

Master Sgt. Michael Hunter, 35, not only received the Silver Star for that April 2010 raid, but also a Bronze Star for a June 2010 mission in which he delivered medical assistance to two wounded soldiers during a 16-hour firefight. Hunter's Bronze Star commendation reads: "His courageous actions all the way through the engagement kept momentum in the friendly force's favor and were decisive to repelling a determined enemy assault and the successful treatment and evacuation of two critically injured U.S. soldiers."

Hunter is a married father of four who has served in Lewis-McChord's 1st Special Forces Group since 2007. In addition to fighting in Afghanistan, he has deployed to Iraq, Cambodia and the Philippines.

His Silver Star commendation says Hunter played a crucial role in executing a joint raid with 28 Afghan commandos and three other American special operators. They intended to identify hardened enemy positions in the Bala Morghab District near Afghanistan's border with Turkmenistan. They found a surprising network of enemy compounds full of fighters. By the time of the raid, insurgents had forced out civilians and laid defenses including mined wire obstacles and machine gun bunkers. The joint commando team snuck through the enemy's front line and scouted further positions. They first took fire when a man peeked out at them from around a corner and returned with an AK-47. The commandos killed that first shooter and took more fire as they approached one of the main enemy positions, killing several insurgents but suffering several nonfatal injuries among their own ranks. They created a helicopter landing zone to evacuate the first four friendly casualties. Commandos kept moving toward enemy positions, but the Afghan forces started to show reluctance after losing several of their teammates. They were hit hard while trying to clear insurgent tunnels. Hunter's Silver Star commendation reads: "When the (Afghan) commandos refused to return to the offensive and attack the insurgents, Sergeant Hunter calmly stepped to the front of them, moved to the nearest tunnel entrance where the enemy was firing from and personally neutralized the insurgents with fragmentation grenades and M4 small arms fire."

Afterward, Hunter persisted in putting himself in danger to lead the way for the U.S. and Afghan special operators attacking the enemy compounds. They discovered an elaborate tunnel network, which they helped obliterate by calling in NATO close air support. Western aircraft dropped four 500-pound bombs on the site, "reducing the compound," as the commendation reads. Hunter's commendation praises him for having the foresight to gather photographs of enemy positions and to pick up material for intelligence analysis. It also says he played an important role in helping the commands from both nations withdraw from the fight under heavy fire. "Sergeant Hunter refused to allow other (Special Operations Forces) operators to place themselves in these exposed positions and insisted on assuming rearguard duty yet again," his commendation reads. "Sergeant Hunter's repeated heroic, selfless actions throughout the withdrawal allowed the patrol to get back to Firebase Todd without suffering any additional serious casualties. Throughout the entire 10-hour engagement, Sergeant Hunter repeatedly provided inspiration, leadership, and guidance to brother SOF operators and Afghanistan Army commandos."
