SAFE WATER OPTIONS

As summer reaches its peak, many pet owners are tempted to let their dogs take a swim on a warm day. However, recent news reminds us not all bodies of water are safe for our animal friends.

Recent Columbus Dispatch articles (July 16 & July 26) have warned of high E.coli bacteria and blue-green toxic algae levels at Buckeye Lake, Western Lake Erie, Grand Lake St. Marys and many other ponds and reservoirs. These bacteria and algae can be toxic and deadly to pets and humans alike. For more information visit Dawn's Suburban Blog.

Our veterinarians recommend only letting dogs swim in swimming pools or bodies of running water, such as creeks and streams. Sprinklers are great! Many ponds or lakes may contain run off with fertilizer or pesticides, as well as bacteria, parasites and algae. Enjoy the rest of the summer and play it safe!

IS YOUR PET ITCHY?
In late summer and fall, many pets are biting, scratching or chewing on themselves. Fleas begin to reach their peak August - October and are notorious for causing itchy reactions along with seasonal pollens, grass, molds, skin infections and mites.

Call us for an appointment to diagnose the source of your pet's uncomfortable skin problems. Relief can come in the form of shots, pills, shampoos, sprays and of course, professional flea control. For more information on pet skin problems, visit Pet Allergy Blog and External Parasites Blog.
