Fire Evacuation Drill

Safety Drills are a critical part of emergency preparedness that allow for a school’s Emergency Plan to be tested for effectiveness in a safe and controlled environment. In compliance with the Illinois School Safety Drill Act and CPS policy, all schools are required to conduct a minimum of eight drills a year. Schools must conduct a minimum of three (3) Evacuation drills; one with the Chicago Fire Department and two completed internally to prepare staff and students for incidents that would require an evacuation of the building. These incidents include, but are not limited to gas leaks, carbon monoxide leaks, chemical spills, or structural failures that would require an evacuation of the building.

Procedures for Evacuation Drill:

  • Students and staff will immediately exit the building using predetermined exit routes and assemble at their assigned Exterior Safe Location.
  • Students and staff should not take any personal belongings with them, but evacuate as if a real emergency was occurring.
  • Upon arrival at the Exterior Safe Location, student attendance will be taken.
  • The principal will verify that all classes and staff members have exited the building and assembled at the correct Exterior Safe Location.
  • Once the building is evacuated and the All Clear code is given, students and staff can re-enter the building.

Be sure to talk with your child about the Fire Evacuation Drill so that they know what to expect.
