Berries & Your Brain -- Berries may slow the brain's decline
|
Freshly picked aroniaberries
|
According to a study recently published in the Annals of Neurology, individuals who ate the most berries delayed cognitive decline. The study was based on a survey of more than 16,000 women who filled out regular questionnaires on their health habits from 1976 through 2001.
Berries contain powerful flavonoid antioxidants. Flavonoids provide brilliant color to many fruits and vegetables. These antioxidants are also found in apples, citrus fruits, tea, and red wine. Previous research has shown flavonoids may reduce the risk of heart disease and other chronic illnesses. This study showed that women who eat the most flavonoids especially berries, had slower cognitive decline over time.
"Our findings have significant public health implications as increasing berry intake is a fairly simple dietary modification to test cognition protection in older adults, said Elizabeth Devore, M.D. one of the authors of the study. The study is important because of the aging population. Americans 65 and over have increased by 15 percent from 2000 to 2010.
