Aroniaberries and Your Immune System

Bowl of Berries
Your best defense for
cold & flu season
It's Fall. The kids are back in school and cold and flu season is just around the corner. When we assess our arsenal to battle the seasonal bugs it is not often we think of stockpiling berries and berry products.

Frances Sheridan Goulart author of "Super Immunity Foods: A Complete Program to Boost Wellness, Speed Recovery and Keep Your Body Strong," notes that one of the most beneficial aspects of eating berries is that they offer a whole host of antioxidants that can boost your immune system. Although Dr. Goulart mentions wild blueberries as having one of the highest levels of antioxidants, it is the Aroniaberry that checks in with a much higher level of antioxidants and a more balanced protection against free radicals that can limit our bodies ability to fight illness.

For instance, the flu virus targets cells within the lungs. Researchers have found the M2 protein, a signature feature of influenza, interferes with the lung cells' function which inhibits the lung's ability to remove fluid. It targets human's lung cells through a system that involves free radicals. If left untreated, the fluid build up can lead to serious complications like pneumonia or bronchitis and also makes it difficult for oxygen to be absorbed into the blood stream.  By eliminating these free radicals, the flu virus weakens and cannot compromise the cells of the lungs.

So this cold and flu season, your best defense may be to add the antioxidant power of berries like the Aroniaberry to your daily diet.

Exciting Exposition Features Superberries

Natural Products Expo East Aroniaberries are poised to become the new "Superfood" as the 2012 Natural Products Expo East came to a close.  Over 21,000 natural product industry professionals attended the tradeshow at the Baltimore Convention Center. Retail buyers and members of the media got a chance to learn what all the talk is about by sampling Superberries' Aroniaberry 100% concentrate, gummy chews and frozen berries.

Case in point, according to a recent MSN report Aroniaberries are one of the "Superfoods you've (probably) never heard of." In comparison to other berries, "Aronia contains three times as many antioxidants as blueberries." What's more, "raspberries and goji berries can't compete when it comes to the Aronia's ability to prevent oxidative stress and cell damage."

Entrepreneur magazine also recently singled out berries like the Aroniaberry as one of the "7 Superfoods to Boost Energy Levels Now." The medical expert cited in the article added, "They also contain other health-promoting phytonutrients, including anthocyanins, a compound that may help to lower blood pressure." And according to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, "Total anthocyanin content in chokeberries (another name for Aroniaberries) is 1,480 mg per 100 g of fresh berries," placing it "among the highest measured in plants to-date."

The Superberries product line harnesses the power of the Aroniaberry in their food products that are not only good for consumers but also taste great. The Superberries lineup consists of 100% Pure Aroniaberry Concentrate that contains a full seven pounds of Aroniaberries in every bottle. Other options include Aroniaberry Gummy Chews for a great-tasting antioxidant snack - one that's made from the same 100% pure Aroniaberry concentrate - that kids, in particular, will love. Finally, for those who prefer their food in its most natural state, Superberries offers Freshly Frozen Aroniaberries that are grown and harvested in the heartland of America and can easily be incorporated into any recipe calling for berries.

Aroniaberry Pear Crisp

2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats

1 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1/2 cup butter

1/2 teaspoon salt

Optional *1/2 cup sliced almonds

5 cups peeled, cubed (1/2 x 1/2) pears (about 5 pears)

2/3 cup sugar

1 tablespoon Superberries Aroniaberry Concentrate

Fresh Frozen Aroniaberries

1 tablespoon all purpose flour

1 cup of fresh raspberries

Vanilla ice cream if desired.

Heat oven to 350 F.  Spray 8 x 9 inch baking pan or pie tin with non-stick baking spray. Set aside. In large bowl, on medium speed, mix together all topping ingredients until pea size balls are formed (1 minute).  Place on 15 x 9-inch baking pan. Bake for 10 or 12 minutes or until golden brown and slightly bubbly.  Turn out onto parchment lined cookie sheet; break into pieces and cool completely. Meanwhile, in a large bowl stir together all filling ingredients except raspberries and Aroniaberries; mix well.  Gently stir in berries. Mixture will turn slightly purple.  Place mixture into prepared pan.  Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until hot and bubbly.  Cool slightly.  Serve in small bowls with topping sprinkled on top.  Serve with ice cream.  Refrigerate leftovers.
