Pathways to Possibilities and Student Success             July 24, 2019
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Community Members,

I hope you're enjoying your summer! It's a great time to relax with family and friends and enjoy all the recreation Tahoe Truckee has to offer.

Summer is a great time for our students to recharge and have some fun, and it's also important to encourage your kids to keep reading all summer long. We want to keep their brains active so they are set up for success when they return to school.  If you're looking for book ideas we have reading lists posted on our homepage for all ages at www.ttusd.org.

Our four-week summer programs have been underway since July 8, and they're going great. Not only are our kids engaged in their learning, but they're also having a lot of fun!

As many of you know, we have a lot of construction underway this summer. Four of our schools are in the middle of their bond construction upgrades, and we're making significant progress this summer on each of them. Thanks to our Facilities department for their dedication and hard work on these projects on behalf of our students. Please see the article below that has details on each project.

See you on September 3, when we kick off the 2019-2020 school year.

Robert J. Leri, Ed.D.
Superintendent Chief Learning Officer
Construction projects underway this summer

We continue to move forward on our bond-funded facility upgrade projects. A great deal of construction is underway this summer, which includes:

Kings Beach Elementary School
Following the last day of school, we began the final phase of modernization of the core area of Kings Beach Elementary School, including the new installation and repair of existing roofs, new windows in the multi-purpose room, interior and exterior paint, a new kindergarten playground, landscaping, new main corridor flooring and ceilings, and fire alarm system upgrades.

We are excited to share that the construction of our new classroom wing is almost complete and will open up for the new school year on September 3. Please save the date for our Kings Beach Elementary Dedication Ceremony on Thursday, September 12, 2019, at 4:30 p.m. at Kings Beach Elementary to celebrate the completion of this upgrade project. The entire community is invited.

Tahoe Lake Elementary
The second phase of this project, the major renovation of the school, is in full swing and a great deal of progress has been made this summer. The new building connector between the administrative building and the building that houses the historical Little Auditorium is under construction. Work is also underway on the interior and exterior of the buildings, including the roof installation on the new building that will house the administrative area and new classrooms.

Truckee Elementary
A new classroom wing is under construction at Truckee Elementary that will house Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, first grade, Special Day Class, Preschool Special Day Class, and the Truckee Elementary Preschool. Ten of our portable classrooms are being removed this summer. We are also working on mechanical upgrades and new finishes in the main hallway for grades two, three, and four. All of this work will be completed and open for the first day of school on September 3, 2019.

Truckee High School
Construction is underway on Increment II, the modernization of the original Truckee High School building. Approximately 7,000 square feet of new construction will house a new library and a new administration office. Other upgrades include enhancements to the girl's locker room, mechanical and electrical upgrades, and new finishes throughout the building.

We are incredibly appreciative of the generous support from our community to make these important upgrades possible.  For more information on these projects or for a complete list of projects and associated timelines, please visit our website at www.ttusd.org.
FREE summer meals for our children!
Children need good nutrition all year long and we realize that during the summer months, some children no longer have access to even one nutritious meal each day. Research shows a lack of nutrition during the summer months may set up a cycle for poor performance once school begins.

We want all of our kids to succeed and we're providing "Seamless Summer" meals (a federally funded program) to help fill the gap. FREE meals will be served daily, Monday through Friday, July 1, 2019 - August 2, 2019,  to any child 18 and under at the following Truckee locations:

Donner Creek Mobile Park - 10715 Highway 89 N, Truckee
Breakfast 8:45 am to 9:05 am
Lunch 12:00 pm - 12:20 pm

Truckee Pines Apartments - 10100 Estates Drive, Truckee

Lunch 12:30 pm to 12:50 pm

Additionally, the district's partner, the Boys and Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe, is providing free meals to youth in our North Lake Tahoe community. Meals will be provided to all children 18 years of age and younger. Free meals will be provided, Monday through Friday, through August 23:

Do you like working with kids? We need you!
The District is actively looking to recruit substitute teachers for the 2019-2020 school year. We are in need of substitute teachers to support the continued learning of our scholars when a teacher is out sick or participating in training.

We currently have a shortage of substitute teachers. In an effort to attract highly qualified substitute teachers, TTUSD has increased the daily compensation rate for our substitute teachers by $30 from $120 per day to $150 per day. Our retired TTUSD teacher substitute pay will increase to $165 per full teaching day, and long-term substitute pay has increased to $175 per full teaching day. We have also created tiered financial incentives for subs who work 25 days or more in a school year.

The process to apply to be a substitute at TTUSD is simple. Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree. The other requirements are minimal, and we will assist applicants through the substitute permit process. Any interested individuals should contact Dana Walton-Smith for more information at [email protected] or by calling (530) 582-2503.

The district is also recruiting for staff in the following positions: food services, custodial, instructional assistants, and bus drivers. Each of these positions offers benefits, paid sick leave and holidays, a pension and a great opportunity to work with our wonderful students. For more information, please visit our district's website at  www.ttusd.org and click on departments/Human Resources/Career Opportunities.
