CELEBRATE
ROSH HASHANAH 5778:
DEDICATE A NEW HIGH HOLIDAY PRAYER BOOK
Last week, you should have received a flyer in your mailbox regarding the dedication of a new High Holiday prayerbook (mahzor). If you did not receive one, please email or call the Temple office (
marilyn@tepv.org
or 201-391-0801)
for information
.
The Conservative movement has a new High Holiday prayer book (
mahzor). It is a dramatic enhancement over the
mahzor that we have used for the past 19 years. This is your opportunity to dedicate a new book by purchasing a bookplate for $36 (four or more at $34 each) IN MEMORY OF a loved one or IN HONOR OF a family member or friend on their special occasion.
Customize your Dedication: Think Bar/Bat Mitzvah, birthday, anniversary, new baby, graduation, award, thank you, mew home, wedding, good health, mazal tov, congratulations. Or make a dedication just for members of your family because you love them.
"The contemporary translations in the new
mahzor give greater meaning and depth to the prayers. Complementing the translations are the commentaries that provide a deeper insight into the prayers and stir the soul."

SYMPOSIUM FEATURING FOUR RABBINIC SCHOLARS
Monday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m.
Rabbi Monosov Rabbi Kniaz Rabbi Moritt Miriam Gray
On
Shushan Purim,
Monday. March 13
w
e are planning a symposium led by Rabbi Loren Monosov, Rabbi Shelley Kniaz, Rabbi Leanna Moritt, and scholar Miriam Gray. The symposium will be centered on critical points in women's lives and how Jewish texts offered help and understanding.
The book,
Chapters of the Heart: Jewish Women Sharing the Torah of Our Lives,
invites readers into the lives of twenty women for whom Jewish language and texts provide a lens for understanding their experiences. The authors don't just use religious words (texts, theologies, or liturgies) like a cookbook. Instead they serve readers something closer to a real meal, prepared with love and intention. Each essay shares one piece of its writer's heart, one chapter of experience as refracted through the author's particular Jewish optic.
The authors write about being daughters, mothers, sisters, partners, lovers, and friends. They share their experiences of parenting, infertility, and abortion. One describes accompanying her young husband through his life-threatening illness. Another tells of her daughter's struggle with an eating disorder. Still another reflects on long decline of a parent with Alzheimer's.
All these writers wrestle with Jewish texts while growing as rabbis, as feminists, and as interfaith leaders. They open their hearts and minds, telling when Jewish tradition has helped make meaning and, on occasion, when it has come up empty. The results are sometimes inspiring, sometimes provocative.
Readers will find new insights into God, into Judaism, and into themselves.
RSVP to Alayne Pick at
alayne1@aol.com
or the Temple office to guarantee your spot!!

2017 SISTERHOOD SUMMER GRANTS PROGRAM
Sisterhood has just the thing for your children and teens this summer: grants for Jewish summer programs for our youth.
Numerous studies have found that Jewish camps are extremely successful at instilling in children Jewish identities so deep that they last a lifetime, and that teen peer trips to Israel strengthen a sense of solidarity among world Jewry and strengthen participants' personal Jewish identity and connection to the Jewish people and Israel.
Applications must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, March 28, and received by Thursday, March 30, or must be placed in Chairperson's mailbox by 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28.
Important Note: Grants are not based on financial need and are limited in availability. Also, we have no control over admission to camp and travel programs. Some fill up quickly, so please apply early.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
With joy and laughter, the third grade students at the Religious School of Temple Emanuel of the Pascack
Valley completed the
Havdalah
service. This simple, short service welcomes the start of a new week as
Shabbat ends on Saturday evening, an hour after sundown. Then, under the
chuppah, a canopy under which one stands, the students received their own, new, special
siddur. The
Siddur Ceremony marks the students' accomplishments of learning how to participate in a service. During this evening program, the students proudly display their skills to their family and friends. You can see their happy faces!
Pictured above, third grade student Austin Groves of Woodcliff Lake stands proud as he receives his new siddur while (left to right) Cantor Alan Sokoloff, Sean Charnow, Brad Groves (Austin's dad), and Religious School Director Rabbi Shelley Kniaz enjoy the very happy and special moment. Smiles all around!!!
