Our Evolution Continues

If you've been following us for a while, then you know that we're in the process of "re-branding" the conference we've been producing for the past 11 years, and shifting our focus for 2022. What was formerly The Afterlife Conference is now The Conference on Death, Grief and Belief, and we hope you'll join us on this new adventure!

Our newsletter is evolving too. In this issue you'll see an eclectic mix of content covering a wide range of interests, from religious trauma and toxic theology to grief support, afterlife beliefs and spiritual inquiry.

Remember... we're not abandoning our involvement with spirituality and mysticism... we're just giving it a new spin. And in doing so, we hope to attract a new audience while keeping our existing one engaged. Trying to offer something for everybody might not be the best strategy, but that's what we're aiming for. So if you see something here that doesn't resonate with you, keep on reading.... you'll find something else that does!

End-of-Life Advisor, Interfaith Chaplaincy, Bereavement and Trauma Support
Our 2022 Conference Confirmed!
Mark Your Calendar!
We are thrilled to announce that we've confirmed a date and location for our 2022 conference! It will be July 15-17, 2022, in Portland, Oregon, and it will be hybrid, which means it will be LIVE, but also livestreamed, so if you can't attend in person, who can watch it online.

It's still almost a year away, so lots of details (and presenters) still need to be confirmed. But for now, here's a sneak peek at some of the topics that will be addressed:

  • Psychics, Mediums and Seers in The Bible
  • Leaving Religion: A Step-by-Step Guide
  • A Heretic's Guide to the Afterlife
  • The Non-Religious Afterlife
  • Jewish Fundamentalism: The Original Orthodoxy
  • Why Psychologists Need to Understand Religious Problems
  • Near-Death Experiences Throughout History and Across Cultures
  • Do Mystics Have to Believe in THAT God?
  • Conceptions of the Afterlife in the Hebrew Bible

We hope to open registration by the end of October, with earlybird prices availalbe until Dec. 31st. Visit our conference website, and stay tuned for updates.

What is Toxic Positivity and Spiritual Bypassing?

Dr. Craig Cashwell focuses his scholarship on behavioral addictions and the competent and ethical integration of spirituality and religion into counseling.

He will be one of our presenters for the professional development symposium on death and bereavement studies that we're offering in January, and we think you'll enjoy hearing what he has to say about "spiritual bypassing" in the following interviews:

Can Religion Give You PTSD?

"When Ana Sharp Williamson came home from her honeymoon in the summer of 2019, she moved in with her husband and began the process of deciding which church they should go to. She didn’t want to go to her childhood church, so decided to go to his until they found the right fit. It was only 15 minutes away from their home in Independence, Missouri.

But every Sunday, Williamson had a severe panic attack five minutes from the church parking lot. “I would start to feel very upset and panicky and start crying and hyperventilating,” the 24-year-old said. “I would pull it together in the car, and we would go in and sit through the service, and I would have another breakdown when we left.” Once, after the pastor made an offhand joke about women not being able to preach, Williamson had a panic attack in the pews.” READ MORE...

After-Death Communication
to Support the Grief Journey

This film follows three grieving widows on their search for relief, culminating in a highly unconventional study at the University of North Texas. There, scientists are working to reduce acute grief symptoms by facilitating telepathic "reconnections" between survivor and deceased. It's the first publicly-funded research of its kind. Click HERE for details.
