Greetings!
Greetings! It's back-to-school time! It is a very exciting time for educators, parents and children to look forward to the start of a productive school year. I hope that you have had a relaxing summer, and now you are focused on preparing children with the tools necessary to be successful in school.
This summer, approximately 400 educators invested their time at the 28th Annual Training Conference held July 20-24, in Sugar Land, Texas. The conference offered an array of professional development sessions, motivational speakers and interesting exhibits to Head Start administrators, staff, parents and friends. Overall, I am proud to report that we had an outstanding, phenomenal training conference. Special thanks is given to Helen R. Wright, Conference Chairperson, for the execution of a very memorable conference (photos below).
Thank you for your continued support of THSA as we do our best to educate our colleagues and provide significant information to the Head Start community. Please remember that your comments, ideas and suggestions are always welcomed. Enjoy the newsletter.

Office of Head Start Latest News...
Grant Opportunities Expand Successful Birth-to-Five Pilot Initiative
HHS' Administration for Children and Families (ACF) made a funding opportunity announcement for organizations interested in providing Head Start and Early Head Start services. The announcement is part of an ongoing effort to improve the quality and accountability of Head Start grantees nationwide following new regulations announced by President Obama in 2011 to ensure that all Head Start programs are providing the highest-quality education and services to children and families.
About half of the opportunities will replicate a successful "birth-to-five pilot" initiative that encourages applicants to develop innovative plans to deliver services to children from birth through kindergarten entry in a single application. These opportunities were selected for the birth-to-five initiative because the current grantee already provides both Head Start and Early Head Start in the same community.Read more.
Early Childhood State Advisory Councils
Approximately three years ago, $100 million in federal funds were made available to support the State Advisory Councils. The grants were designed to be one-time startup grants to help states and territories (states) develop their respective early childhood systems. States used the funds to promote school preparedness of young children, for instance, by engaging families in activities to improve children's early social, emotional, and cognitive development. States directed Council funds to support the professional development of early childhood educators to improve the skills of the early childhood professionals. States also invested in improving the quality and capacity of existing early childhood education and development programs and services. The Early Childhood State Advisory Councils Status Report 2013 describes the progress of each Council in detail. President Obama's Early Learning Initiative: Supporting Children with Disabilities
The beginning years of a child's life are critical for building the early foundation needed for success later in school and in life. Making sure young children with disabilities have access to high quality early learning programs and assuring that early learning settings across the country foster an environment of inclusivity are priorities of the Obama administration. Children with disabilities need high quality early learning opportunities in a safe and nurturing environment where they can learn and develop alongside their peers.
To expand high-quality early learning opportunities in the years before preschool, the President called for an investment in Early Head Start-Child Care Partnerships. These partnerships will support states and communities that expand the availability of Early Head Start and child care programs that can meet the highest standards of quality for infants and toddlers, serving children from birth to age 3.
President Obama's Early Learning Proposal will bring our nation closer to providing a continuum of high quality early learning experiences to hundreds of thousands of children and families birth to school entry, preparing them to excel in school and beyond. Read more.

Child Care Provider Vaccinations
Immunizations are not just for children. Keeping up-to-date on your vaccinations help protect you and the children you work with from vaccine-preventable diseases that can be transmitted in a child care setting, including influenza, pertussis (whooping cough), and varicella. As a child care provider you come into contact with many viruses and bacteria while working with children. Some diseases, such as pertussis, are more serious in children, while others, such as chicken pox, are worse for adults.
What vaccines should be considered? The yearly flu vaccine not only protects you, but also helps make sure you do not spread the disease to children. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of 6 months. Since the type of flu that sickens people every year changes, you should get a vaccination every year. One Tdap vaccine protects against pertussis, which affects the lungs and is spread from person to person through the air. Pertussis can be very serious, especially for infants who are too young to be vaccinated. An individual with a mild case of pertussis may have a bad, lingering cough and can still transmit the disease to young children. You likely received a series of vaccines as a child to prevent pertussis. However, the protection from those vaccines may have worn off. You can receive one Tdap vaccine as the best way to prevent pertussis as an adult. Varicella vaccine protects against chickenpox. Many adults already have had chickenpox and are now immune to it. However, the disease can be serious for adults, so adults who have never had chickenpox or been vaccinated should get two doses of the vaccine. |
